Silver coins should be kept in airtight containers while they are being stored. This will prevent damage from exposure to air or humidity. However, not all so called "air tight" containers are air tight. Buy ony quality coin capsules/containers. Ask a qualified coin dealer for a recommendation, Place the encapsuled coins in a box with extra silica dessicant or invest in a box lined with anti-corrosion material.

Don't store your silver coins in Mylar 2 x 2's, in PVC album pages.
Over a period of 10 or more years the gassing out of the PVC will eventuallly get through to the coins. Archive quality album pages are much to be preferred.
If you use PVC album pages over extended periods of say 10 or more years, you are looking for trouble, even with Mylar 2 x 2's.

Are there problems storing your coins in the cardboard 2 X 2 with plastic so you can see both sides of the coin? Most of the older coins we've bought are in those. Should I moved them into something else?
As for security - we have some in the safe deposit box, some in a safe that is bolted to the floor at home. Have a dog, but would like to get a security system as well. Till then, I just split stuff up.
We are becoming regular enough at the coin shop, they are more friendly. A little teaching, chatting and learning each trip. One of the older gentlemen on staff mentioned making sure you split things up between the home safe and a safey deposit box or something so it's not all in one place. He was glad to know what wasn't an issue.

Good question terrib...I have purchased a lot of 90% silver that is stored in the cardboard 2x2's. Interested to hear what others have to say about this.

To be on the safe side, I would not keep my silver coins in those 2x2 s ... although I have seen some coins that have been in them for years and still look great. It seems that 2x2 s are worst if the humidity rises because they tend to retain the moisture between the plastic and the coin.

A small box can be buried under attic insulation, or wrapped in it, depending on how often you access it.

How good are the square "coin safe" rolls for long term storage? Most of my silver is circulated 90% - just this week I've started to get my first few slabbed coins (you guys are rubbing off on me)...but I keep most of mine in those square coin safe tubes.
Need to get some nice boxes for them to store the rolls inside them in the safe..hmmm, do cigar shops sell empty cigar boxes reasonably? Probably not, seems like nothing in this world is reasonable anymore.

Actually, I bury all of my bullion silver all over my back yard in small amounts. I take note of the GPS position for each. If the GPS system is replaced by newer technology, at least the bulldozer driver will have a smile on his face when the land is re developed sometime in the future!  |

Like EarlB, I collect mostly circulated 90% silver also. Will storing these in the paper wrappers you get from the bank have any harmful effect on these over the years? I have a lot of 90% circulated silver in these type rolls now.

Just bought 4 liter "Really Useful Box" @ Staples yest. ($7.49) Very sturdily "Made in USA" @ works well with the square coin tubes. My Morgan & Peace dollars are also in the square tubes in a similar container. I have a dropped ceiling in my finished basement. If you remove a couple 2x2' tiles you can attach 3/4" plywood to the 2x8's giving you a nice storage area for something like this.  |

I like to consider the possibility of fire damage when picking storage options. I don't want my stash to end up like the first pic here: http://www.ncscoin.com/news/viewart...rticleID=871Plastic melts much easier than glass and fire resistant boxes are pretty cheap now days. |
