Personally, I'd take a gold half sovereign over a mule any day of the week - they are far nicer looking then the mule and a lot more satisfying to own. From an investment standpoint though, I'd probably go with the mule.

As for the Mule, all I will add is take your time buying. Mine cost me $510 but is a stunning coin. Try & find one without too much wear &/or bag marks.

I saw one at a coin show towards the end of last year, but that's the only one I've ever seen for sale in the flesh. I'd keep my eye on ebay though. There have been a few in recent times. Failing that, maybe an auction. |

Just about any coin dealer in the world will recognize a half sov, I doubt the mule carries that kind of recognition.

Ok, I have decided on a 1915S half sovereign - no its not scarce but it is affordable.
I have found one which is perfect except for a small nick at 12 on the obverse which I only noticed with a loupe. 100% lustrous with not a single other scratch.
Their currect offer is $310 is this too much if the coin is GEM other than this very small nick?

Hmm ,yep happy buyer on that one ,Enworb I just looked at a dealers online site, 1915s 1/2 sovereign ms64 $325, ms65 $395, OK I know you are looking at a raw coin ,just giving you more info to help you.I would haggle, common date,has a nick, and willing pay cash  , I do have some Scottish blood tho  Goodluck |

They want $350 I have them down to $310. I moght be able to get a little off with cash hopefully. Maybe a graded ms-64 is the way to go. I dont like slabbed coins too much but could always crack it open. From what I know of TPG companies though a ms64 coin could have some imperfections anyway? could you post the link to the ms64 one so I can see? thanks bellyflorin |

ok Enworb , here you go , I would say the dealer would most likely be a member here ?,he's a nice chap , http://www.drakesterling.com/coins-...gns/george-v , there does look like a mark on the obverse tho , the ms65 looks nice , yep you still need to judge the coin in the slab , anyway have a look, it's always good idea to compare. |

The ms64 seems to have quite a few scratches on both sides. ms65 is very nice! thanks for the link. I might have to mention I can get a slabbed one for the same price, mention the nick and try and get it down a bit more. Thanks bellyflorin
