I'll be honest. I'd have said, "Look, I found a gold coin!"

Of course the issue arises when more than one person was present at the discovery. Three people can only keep a secret if two are dead.

As a post script to this story, when FDR took us off the gold standard in 1933 and gold was recalled, a lot of gold went to numbered Swiss accounts. Europe was free to do whatever with U.S. gold. It's not surprising that someone chose to put their savings in these double eagles. I expect to hear of more stashes in the future.
