I'm going to have to wait a few days to get the weight for you guys but here are the best photos I have of the coin.

also the rim of the coin is not the same width all the around the coin some spots its as thick as a penny, then in others it is thinner than a penny

Is that rust? What plating rusts?

I have a 53 that looks plated though it has a very slight hint of yellow. Here it is compared to a normal cent and a plated 43.

I have a 62' that is also silver in color but has that slight yellow tint to it like you are talking about.

Raoul, on the penny, the brown spots, are they on top of the silver or is it like the silver is scrapped off.

there are a couple possibilities here I guess. One would be its plated with some type of metal and another would be wrong planchet for the type. Weight should be able to give you an answer to either scenario. Have you checked to see if it was magnetic? if it is then you know its not silver but not sure what it could be plated with if that is what is determined to have happened

Apollo, the brown spots are on top of the silver.
And Bryan, it's not magnetic so I really don't know, I guess when I get my scales tomorrow I will be able to tell if it's been plated making it weigh more or if it is a different planchette.

There is a video I believe on YouTube that shows how to make silver & gold cents.

Hello. I found this forum while looking for an answer about a similar 1961 D penny. I have an ammunition reloading scale and my 1961 D weighs 46 grains which is slightly less than a Wheat penny and slightly more than a 1982 penny. It is also slightly thinner than both. Non magnetic.

That is within the weight range for a copper cent. It is most likely plated. This was popular in the 1950's - 1960's for jewelery.

The darker color is from the plating rubbing on on the higher devices. The color you are seeing is the copper underneath. A Wheat cent and a copper cent from 1961 are the same weight. (taking into consideration the Wheat cent wasn't severely worn reducing the thickness. Then it would be less) You mentioned the opposite. The proof cents from that era are very shiny and have wider squared rims.
