Personally, I'd be more confident that a Monster Box (with original mint straps intact) would be genuine than I'd be with a gold bar that could easily be faked. I just keep reading more and more horror stories about counterfeit coins and bullion being produced in China (and elsewhere) and spending that much money makes me very cautious.

monster. ox most likely....
if you needed money you could easily break it up and sell it. the gold bar... not so much. Finding a buyer for a role, of silver eagles is much much easier then a 10 oz gold bar lol

I'd go with the silver, simply because I feel it will go up a bigger %.

I agree with BF, as my mind tells me silver is better, even though I would want the gold....
Which would I like PERSONALLY to hold an own the gold, but that by NO means translates to that decision being the most profitable.....
I would say there is rather high chance that silver will out perform gold over the next ten years, more reason to buy gold perhaps, lol....
I think the overall feeling is that gold has had its run, but man 12 years an going strong, it still shows little signs of fading anytime soon....
But again good chance 500 oz. of silver will outperform 10 oz. of gold over the next ten years, only time will tell eh.....

I pick monster box. because after you sell all the coins, you still have a nice box left and maybe a few tubes as souvenir

Logistics. Storage? Transportation? Safety? What're your goals with this purchase?
I'd probably pick the gold and put it in a safe deposit box at the bank if I had to choose.

Quote: Logistics. Storage? Transportation? Safety? What're your goals with this purchase? Great comment and one that only each of us can answer for ourselves. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I have a bunch of silver already, so would probably pick gold. Not sure I would choose a 10 oz. bar, though. I would be more likely to split the 10 ozs. of gold into about a 2:1 ratio of half and quarter oz. AGEs or Canadian Maples.

Interesting bar TBK with cool ship sinking history. Also interesting to note that the ebay community felt it was worth 34, 202 and it silver content if you used the weekend silver spot price of 32.25 or so it would add up to around 30,250 or so.... So almost four thousand worth of premium not too shabby on a bar that is almost 1000 oz..... Not an easy bar to liquidate. Not to say there is not plenty of big money out there that can buy such an item, but they would have to be far an few between....

You are so right Brother. I have started buying eagles from gold mart this past week. I love that they give you the same price if you order 10 as you would if you ordered 500. I just can't see any reason to dump a lot money in right now. I can just add a tube a month and minize the downside potential. You need to be my financial advisor I would be a lot better off. As for the gold dredging if your wife and my wife ever feel like they have gotten enough of us I'm right there with you. I am a certified diver so at least I have been in the water at least I got that going for me lol.

Who knows what the future will bring and if that ever happens I would be up for the challenge still yet. That would be a profitable business perhaps if you made the right connections, and learned quickly from the mistakes that a any greenhorn in that field is gonna make. Trial an error....
Easy to die in the Bering sea, even close to shore. Rock slides can collapse on a diver vacuuming too much of the foundation around a large rock formation, and if to close or the hose gets hung and it falls on you, well your dead. Vacuuming your own arm happens often, clearing rocks an sand....
Beyond the risk, the other big hurdles would simply be the crazy HIGH cost of living in Nome, the short summer, and mechanical costs an issue BY FAR the biggest issue. A good gold dredge runs from 50 to 75 grand, not including fuel an repairs, and that is entry level....
That one family that put that bull dozer shovel on their dredge (only known like it), they make by far the most money. They literally scoop up oz. at a time with that big bucket, and when their engines shut down, they use it to paddle the huge dredge. Most unconventional thing that actually works that I have ever seen....
On the same show "Bering Sea gold", that one fellow probably in his mid thirties had a job working for the State of Alaska in child services, and he gave it all up to try it out, and by mid season his initial boat investment was meant, and he had enough money to get through the winter. Everything else he made was just profit. He did real well, and with just the help of another who had a bit more experience then himself....

Harder to liquidate a 10oz bar of gold I think.

selling all 500oz of silver coins at once ain't no easy feat either. it comes down to if you want it to be divisible or not.
