and if you get a flat-clinch stapler, you won't have to put pliers anywhere near your coins.

I agree with Fuzzy. Midway is a good place. I only staple in the corners for the US Dollar sized 2x2. Quote:

I go with one on top and one on each side that way the whole bottom section is free to write details on.

I do three sides, halfway between edge and coin, flattened. But really, it doesn't matter. As long as the coin stays where it's supposed to, you're good.

I mostly tape the opening edges. However, that does tend to leave sort of a lot of room for a coin to move but very little air can get to the coins that way.
As to a location for a staple, this too could depend on if and how you open that 2x2 in the future. For example to close to the coin, the removal of that staple could end up damaging the coin. To far from the coin leaves possibly to much movement inside. This though depends too on if you use a 2x2 for a Cent for a Dime or a Quarter 2x2 for Nickels as many do.
Many remove the staples so the 2x2 can be reused again, to close to the coin could be a disaster again, pending on the method of staple removal.

I generally am profoundly against stapling anywhere near a coin, which is why I use flips.

I like the self-adhesives. Quick to use, sealed, and all the space available to write on! Worth the slight extra cost.

staple all four sides near the coin so it won't move. Flatten -- flap staplers aren't flat enough.

 Also for the fact that there are no staples to scratch other coins in nearby 2x2's and they more aesthetically pleasing than them dog ugly stapled 2x2's |

Remember that the flattened staples are really difficult to remove easily. And the more staples you use, the more chances of damaging a coin when removing a staple. Of courses this depends on if you plan on removing the staples at all and the method on that removal. A long time ago I purchased a Lincoln Cent, 1921S, in a high grade MS. I wanted to place it in an Album so I tried to remove the staples with a screwdriver. It slipped and ran accross Lincoln's face. |

So I just staple at the four corners. Reason being is that way as they slide in and out of boxes, the staples dont rub against other coins.
Also, when I take a coin out of a 2x2 (or any cardboard flip), I puncture (very very very carefully) the edge of the mylar, and press the coin gently through the role, which tears the mylar out, but I dont have to worry about open staples.
2x2's are so cheap they are worth saving. IMO.

I put 4 staples in, top, bottom, left and right. I try to get as close to the coin as I can without having the stapler touch the coin through the plastic. If I have to get the coin out of the 2x2, I don't remove the staples, I just cut the cardboard around the staples with scissors so there is no chance of anything touching the coin.
