Yep "the Unicorn", our responses to "Humpty's treasure" are pretty similar . No doubt about it, that wallet with its coins is a "beauty" !. I especially like the unique family connection ... Squire

Thankyou all for your replies. When I googled how unique it was I contacted "a 1966 decimal changeover nut"(her own words) from a link on this post.. She told me to separate the PVC from the coins which I have done by placing the pvc wallet in a clip seal bag and the coins in a seperate bag. The coins were in a open top moulded plastic plate which slips in under the clear plastic sleeve (as seen in photo). The coins are in very good condition considering they have not been removed from the sleeve for 47 years. The 1cent piece however has darkened in colour. Should I try and clean it or leave it as is?

I'd just leave the coins in the PVC - if nothing else, contributes to the authenticity of the wallet. The plastic wallet is worth $1000s of dollars; not the coins. If someone had the cash to buy this set, then no doubt they wouldn't mind dropping $150 bucks on a set of uncirculated coins.

They are the original coins though and they are nice to have to complete the piece and the history behind it. Its good you've separated the coins out in my opinion.

I thought someone must have been talking about me, my ears have gone all red. I am the said decimal changeover nut.
Humpty the coins will be fine, the hard moulded plastic that they're in is a safe plastic (HDPE -one of the good one's). It's the pvc wallet you want to store with the coins but in a zip lock bag so there's not direct contact anymore. They didn't realise back then what detrimental effects the pvc has on coins in the long term.

Hi Everyone - I stumbled on this forum by accident, & have read the posts with interest. I AM the Charlie Browne mentioned. IF anyone has any questions I will be pleased to try to answer them... I sold my original wallet to a Queensland buyer for $1800.00 - so I guess that creates a value for that period.I am not a collector & I do not know if another has come on the market since I sold mine.

So you sold it for that price not long after you got it?

re : to protect the coins from toning in any PVC wallets. For years I have been cutting out a piece of tissue paper nearly as wide as the PVC wallets ( especially for the likes of the worst example of coins being damaged - the 1983 red wallet mint sets ) and twice as long as the inner pockets holding the coins. I wrap the tissue paper around both sides of the inner pocket so that the tissue paper protects the coins from coming into contact with the inner sides of the red mint wallet's outer. The coins have stayed in perfect condition - no plastic/PVC gunk on any of them at all - . And as a further precaution, I store the red wallets standing upright. Perfect 1983 20c coins, thank goodness.

The BEST way to store the coins from the PVC wallets is to remove them and store them in saflips or 2x2's in a PVC free album, The PVC wallets can be retained But make sure they are stored well away from any coins.

agree, but the coins from any RAM red wallet(s) should be given a light tidy up with warm water and soap, a thorough rinse then a pat dry with a soft cloth, like the inside of an old T shirt, before being placed in to a 2 x 2 . Otherwise you could transfer the discolouration/slight toning/gunk into the 2 x 2 .
