Paid $175 for mine 1.5 years ago. Turned around and sold it though for just under $200 when money was tight. Beautiful coin. Wish I kept one.

do all capsules with black insert cause that trouble?

i presume that all the thinly gold plated coins housed with that black foam insert will suffer from the same problem. I don't know if there are Any other RCM coin that was encapsulated with the same stuff though... The only reason the black foam was used was to prop up the unconventional shape of this coin, the first square coin from the RCM

Thanks, Po. I knew this was a fairly expensive coin but it looks like I underestimated its value.

Prices seem to be all over the place on this coin. BIN on ebay are between 145 and 310 yet two sold on the weekend for about $110. In the past month or so, selling price have been in the 140-160 range.

Is the selling price variance related to the tarnishing? I don't know of any recent RCM coin that had such a chronic problem so I'm thinking if you have one that is not tarnished, it might be very rare.

After reading a post here about tarnishing I dug out mine, and yeah, totally ruined.Heart breaking.

CC Ottawa I think your right , when the dust finally settles I guessing that the ones not tarnished will be a lot more valuable than they are today.

Yes, the tarnished ones sell considerably cheaper. To my (limited) knowledge this is the coin that had the problem with the wrong type of plastic in the black inserts. Definitely fixed in the more recent issues.

I just checked mine also and it is tarnished. Is there any I can do to make it look new? Should I remove the foam?

sorry to hear that fifty2.
Yes I would remove the foam just to stop further damage. I don't know if this is right but I took mine right out of the plastic case thinking there may be corrosive matter still inside the case.
I don't think it can be restored, but I'm no expert.
Maybe it can be dipped or painted or something like that.

anyone still looking....

though you need to tolerate "toning", which I think in this case is really damage from the foam.

And we all thought this was damage. Turns out it is toning and adds value to the coin.
