The "cost" of this isn't the Two Cents they're giving you, it's the tens of thousands of dollars they pay for the ads. As others have mentioned, they're trying to get you on a mailing/customer list. Banks and phone companies spend into the hundreds of dollars each for customers, why should the coin biz be any different?

I think I saw this ad. It's actually from Littleton.

I didn't see the ad but I would bet it is from Littleton. However, in fairness to Littleton, I responded to one of their ads a few years ago. The ad was for 10 half dollars 2002 - 2006 P and D for $10 (double face value, about the same as the Mint charges). I wanted the halves and I could get up to 3 sets, so I ordered 3. Of course they also sent additional coins for approval. I just sent the other coins back and asked them to cancel my subscription, and I never got anything from them again. I can't complain.

There businesses out there that are far worse than Littleton. They may not be the best, but one can certainly do a lot worse.

It is from Littleton. I read it again and it says they will send me their catalog and "other facinating selecions from our coins on approval service." I called and asked the lady who answered (who was very nice) if they pay for return shipping on the unwanted coins. She said they pay for return shipping on the first set but after that its up to me. I also asked if they sell my information and she promptly responded "No." -take that how you will I guess..
I dont mind the junk mail.. Sometimes its useful and sometimes not, but I recycle it and the post office could use the business. I think I'm going to order them.

It is good that it is a Littleton ad, they are probably the most trustworthy mail order coin company out there. Littleton is overpriced but fair, other companies such as the American Historical Society and World Reserve Monetary Exchange just to name two, tend to have more ambiguous/shady sales tactics.

Quote: Littleton is overpriced but fair Factoring in their cost of doing business, they're quite reasonable. L is one of the largest ANA supporters out there. They recruit hundreds of members every year. They provide jobs for around 400 people year-round, in a small town.

I believe Littleton takes advantage of older Americans. I saw an ad in my AARP magazine for a deal on Morgan dollars for $39.95 each which they claim is 41% off list price. If these dollars were key dates I can see that but I think they were just common dates and circulated, too.

How often do you see an infomercial that says "But call in the next 10 minutes and we will DOUBLE the offer! thats a $75 value for just $10!" Who decides what the "Value" of an item is? I would think the company selling them just pulls a number from the air.

Quote: I believe Littleton takes advantage of older Americans No more than similar advertisers, and a lot less than most. Plenty of buyers take advantage of themselves, by not reading the offer.
