I can relate to the Proof and below set. The only proof coins I have are the Bicentennial in 40% Silver. The rest are MS-68 and below reverse chronologically (most recent issues are the highest in grade and slowly decline in grade as you go further back in time). Did I mention that my 7070 is all TOP III slabbed?  I agree with the others; it's your set, do it your way! Most of all, HAVE FUN!  Edited by oih82w8

WOW! What a lot of great advice, insight and suggestions! Please allow me to take a couple of hours to re-read and try to digest all that has been said. I will try and respond to posts that pertain to particular questions. OK, time to read again...

Not sure if I can post the link, but search "Dansco 7070 Cracker's Remorse." If nothing else, it's a good read and food for thought for someone headed in your direction.
So now my official recommendation is to do an average circulated 7070 in the album, then if you so desire, compliment it with a high grade slabbed set which you could personalize any way you'd like and then retain nickelsearcher to make you a customized set of slab holder boxes out of something like cocobolo or some other exotic. The end result would be an incredible heirloom creation. OK, that's the best I have. Good luck.

I agree that is a must read for anyone considering a type set. Also don't let the Dansco 7070 get in the way of building the type set that you personally want to build. There are many widely varying definitions of what makes up a type set some of which include the the earlier 1790's coins which can become really expensive to fill the slot. I'm a younger collector in my early twenties and I have been working on a type set off an on for the past few years buying a coin here and there and occasionally upgrading. Due to budgetary concerns at the moment I'm focusing on an XF-40 minimum grade set with some of the newer less expensive coins being in the mid MS range. My Seated dollars, Bust Quarter, Large Cents, and Bust Halves will likely need to stay in that XF-40 to 45 range until my collecting budget gets larger. Most importantly don't feel rushed in completing this project, many people spend years building a type set and are methodical in waiting for the perfect coin to come along which is in their budget and which fits their set well. The main objective is to have fun along the way and have a set you can be proud of. Hope this helps, Joe |

Thank you for all of your ideas, insights, thoughts and remarks: However, I am going to have to place my Dansco 7070 project on hold for a while.
I have just received the official word I am being recalled to active duty for deployment, for a 4th time! 
Everything in my eCrater store must go...
Items can go one at a time or I am willing to sell all 189 currently listed items to one buyer.

This article was an awesome read and has certainly raised some red flags in my tentative plans. It now looks like, when the time comes, I will be assembling 2 U.S. Type Sets:
The first set will be comprised of XF to AU coins and placed in the Type Set album. This will also allow for some handling of the coins by our daughter.
The second set will be made-up of high AU to MS coins that will remain in their TPG slabs.
I may tweak this idea a little bit, has I will soon have plenty of time to think about the project.
