It depends on the series but I picked AU58.

Many nice AU58 coins are in MS61/62 holders these days you know.

'AU' has always been a bit of a misnomer for me.
'About Uncirculated' to me means the coin could be bit above OR below Uncirculated.

Same with 'MS'. Although I accept the terminology, and I understand why a range of 'MS' grades exist. Nevertheless, 'MS' to me means exactly that: 'Mint State', that is, exactly how the newly minted coin left the coining press.

Usually AU, but I have also seen some MS62 coins that looks better then said grade too. It also depends on the series.

I would rather have an Mint State coin because technically it is a higher grade of coin with some to all of it's mint lustre and no sign of circulation.
As I collect mainly Aussie coins It is hard to find older pre decimal coins that still have the lustre on them.
I agree that the bag marks are a detracting feature but signs of circulation are a far worse detraction IMHO.

I would go for a nice looking AU over a so-so looking MS.

I'd always have an AU58 over a MS61 (or 62 or 63), even if the 58 was slightly more expensive (which it, of course, almost never is).
I'd also prefer, in many cases, a nice XF45 over either, but that's mostly for price reasons (e.g. I have an 1907 IHC that looks perfect to me - as in I have few coins with any better eye appeal - but is probably a technical XF, and was bought for XF price).

I would take a nice problem-free AU any day. You get all of the detail and most of the luster without the MS price tag!

"Eye appeal is buy appeal"

I'm sure that I am plagiarizing someone.

As so many have already stated, sometimes difficult. I too have seen AU-58 coins that look as new as possible and MS-62 or 3 that look like just taken out of change and not good change either. The problem with this poll is naturally who does the grading.

Gotta love the underdog! I would agree that I seem to see more high-end AU coins that catch my eye than low-end MS coins that do the same.

Just Carl; for the sake of this poll, the individual does the grading. Whether slabbed or raw is up to the individual.

I personally prefer to collect circulation coins, and for these I prefer to see some evidence that the coin actually circulated. So a high AU coin is definitely more interesting to me than a low MS or even a high MS, especially since they're usually a lot cheaper.

For NCLT coins, it's the opposite: if an NCLT is "AU" or worse, that's a sign of improper handling by a careless collector, not circulation; I'd definitely prefer these to be MS, unless I personally find them in change.
