quote Auld Farte: "..and this one sounds like another candidate for the "avoid" list.."
Hey, maybe we should consider having an official avoid list on the forum. Sure sounds like it would be helpful.

We have the "Discouraged Sellers" sticky thread on the ebay Discussions forum. Maybe that would be a good place to add 'em?

Gonefishin, this is a very informative post and I agree that it's very important to be cautious when purchasing coins. If I were you, I would consider contacting your post office and reporting this as postal fraud. If he had only charged you the 5% restocking fee (which I agree is just a rip-off since I think anyone who has to charge a restocking fee is expecting a lot of returns), you wouldn't be able to do anything, but I think you may have a case since he charged you more than was stated on his website. Just a thought. I hope you don't mind, but I broke your posts into paragraphs so that it would be easier to read.

******************************************************************* " quote: Hey, maybe we should consider having an official avoid list on the forum." ********************************************************************* It is important to have a section on the forum to discuss our experiences with sellers such as we have with ebay, However we need to be careful, because when doing so as a forum, we open ourselves up to some legal issues. Although one or two of us may have bad experiences with a seller Another may have an exceptionally good experience. The seller you have an unpleasant experience with may be my "brother" (father, mother, uncle, cousin, etc.) Let us continue to document experiences with dealers (sellers) and let others make their decisions but I hope other than sites like ebay where sellers are known to be "bad" that we never have to list BAD SELLERS but please continue to warn each of us if you have a BAD experience. No one should have to accept coins that are not as advertised nor pay fees that are "unreasonable"

You have good ideas about an "avoid list." I think that would be helpful for many people. I can tell you what I have done so far. I filed a report with the Spokane BBB. I explained my side and submitted the complaint. They said they would be in touch within 30 days. I also think I will go to Yahoo auctions and ebay and post my comments where this dealer sells their coins. I will also look into postal fraud-thank you susanlynn9 for the advice. I don't know what will happen with this, but if nothing else others should know what type of recourse they have if similar things happen to them when ordering coins.

Posting about bad AND good experiences with coin dealers should be welcome on any coin forum. An AVOID list is a good idea, as is a PREFERRED list. Nick

I just went and took a look at their website, and by their own terms you should have received a 100% return and a very pleasant experience........yeah, right. I love the part about how they only want $330 for an ngc ms66 Morgan.........and they get to choose the actual coin and date. Sounds a lot like the TV hucksters, but at least they never complain about returns. Gonefishin, we all make mistakes as we learn our way around this hobby..........at least you made the right decision to send them back and take a small hit. Edited to add welcome aboard, Gonefishing!

Its good to see I am not alone in having an experience like this. Seems like many people have had similar ones with collecting.
hadleydog: I looked at your toned coin website. Can I send you a picture of an 1880 CC morgan-I got this from my grandpa. I wanted someone to look at it and see if it has toning on the back or some kind of burn marks. It is still in the gov plastic box. If so, let me now where I can email the picture.
thanks

From the Coinsplus website: If you are not satisfied with your coin purchase, you may return the coin within 5 business days of your receipt of the package for a full refund of the purchase price. This policy applies to any non-bullion transaction. Returned coins or currency must be in their original, unopened packaging. We ask you to notify us, within the 5-day period, that you intend to return the coin. We will then instruct you as to the best way to return the coin so that the coin will be insured. There are very specific procedures for mailing numismatics so please call first. All credit card orders are subject to a 5% restocking fee. All bullion sales are final. This policy applies to any non-bullion transaction. Returned coins or currency must be in their original, unopened packaging. Hate to say it, but you probably are lucky he even gave any kind of refund. Does not make it right, but that is business nowadays. ALWAYS, read the fine print. MM

I too have had problems with dealers off of ebay. I find that dealing with the big dealers who advertise in NN or Coin World to be the most reputable because they have a big ego and do not like to have unfavorable comments made about their coins. Have had ver good success with those dealers.

I sure would like to see an avoid dealer list as well as a suggested or preferred dealer list somewhere. I've purchases coins from on line dealers in the past as although not a horrible experience, just never something to brag about. I believe most on line dealers feel they can get away with many things due to not much a person can do about it. Lodge complaints all over the place and not much is ever done. Even posting a really crooked coin dealer on coin message boards or forums only is visable by a few thousand people and the internet has many, many millions of viewers. A rather shaddy coin dealer can make a fortune long before anyone can actually do anything about the situation. Fortunately we have coin shows almost every weekend around me so puchasing coins via the internet is just not something I'll ever do again. One thing I've noticed is coin dealers that frequent coin shows appear to have the same deals on their web sites as at the coin shows. I think this is because they have an in person reputation to uphold. Possibly if a check of a dealer shows they attend and sell at coin shows they may be a more reputable choice if and when buying over the internet. One dealer at a coin show I always kid about all the mistakes on his web site and he gave me some decent valuable coins free for the suggestions and information about that site.

I see that about the bullion, still he did send me bad coins-why wouldnt they stand behind what they sell,Susan said it well: they are probably expecting a lot of returns. I took many pictures of them. Would any of you like to see them? I would like to know what others think of the "blemishes" I found. Maybe I did return ms 69-70 coins with a number of marks on them. They do come out very well in the pictures. I would also like to know what you would grade them. See if I am being to picky.
I can email the coins pictures to you or if I knew how, I would post them on this site.
thanks
