Here in Brisbane, a city of 2 million people, there are three coin shows a year. The "national" coin show (which is on the scale of a small multi-state regional coin show in the US) costs $10 to get in, though there are discount coupons readily available to get you in for $8.
A smaller-scale show happens twice a year. This costs $2 to get in.
I'd happily pay both.

I would more than happily hand over $10 to get in. The more the organiser gets from admission, the less the dealers have to pay to have a table and then the cheaper the prices (in the wonderful theoretical world that is).

I work in a shop and we don't charge customers an entry fee, to come in and spend money. Where is the difference? Steve

Yeah, Long Beach Expo is 6 bucks and parking was 5. I don't mind as long as the money is going into something worthwhile, ie advertizing, I would like to see some money going into more attractions for kids at these shows.

A couple bucks for adults is fine, kids should be free. The flea market here is $1.50.

I too have never been to a coin show. I understand that there are 1 or 2 a year in London I will make an effort to get down to one of them even if they are expensive to get into (and I expect they will be)
I think it is a balance, a couple of dollars is probably not going to put too many people off (at least it shouldnt put off the ones who have money and want to spend it)

I pay $2 for most of the shows I attend some go as high as $6. Most offer you something in return such as a raffle ticket for an hourly prize draw. Usually a gift coupon for the tables. Most shows I go to are small and benefit a club so I have no issues paying.

I chose the highest amount listed ($3) because to me, this is entertainment, and I find coin shows entertaining.

Rereading this thread, Fuzzy brings up a good point. While people under 16 are usually free here, $6 will not allow new collectors our world. People need to take interest in coins or this hobby will disappear.

There are two regular coin shows that I attend; neither one charges admission, nor do they charge for parking (and both venues have paid parking for other events, so it says a lot that the coin shows are free). There is never a shortage of attendees, so I am sure the dealers are happily paying whatever the cost is to keep their tables. Would it be possible to poll the dealers and get their opinion, or would doing so frighten them off for no reason? I do not envy you, this decision, and I think you are doing the right thing coming here to discuss it first. For the record, if either of my shows started charging admission (or for parking), I would still go. I have nothing better to do.

I've never been to a coin show. I am looking at going to the ones below in August and September.
@David I've found a monthly show in Birmingham and a show in London. The Show in London is called Coinex.

It all depends on the size of the show and how many tables are there. A small show with 10 or 15 tables, $1 max. 20-30 tables $2. Larger $3. Long Beach I would gladly pay $10 to get into.

So far the few coin shows that I attend don't charge to get in. I look at it this way. Why should I be charged a fee to spend my own money. I go to buy, the dealers are there to make a profit. If the dealers don't make a profit on us buyers, why are they there show after show?
