Revisit that one, with more patience. I don't think it's a "carbon spot."

Correct, the black area is cupric oxide and permanent. It cannot be removed without using strong acids which would completely ruin the coin.

Typically, once verdigris advances to the moderate to heavy stage, it will permanently stain the surface. The conservation process with VC will remove the actual active verdigris (light to moderate) but that's it. Heavy verdigris and the stains left by verdigris are there for the life of a coin unless you resort to extremely harsh cleaning.

"(122) Q: What should I do if my VERDI-CAREâ„¢ arrives frozen?
A: Freezing will not harm the product. If it arrives frozen, simply allow to thaw at room temperature and
use. DO NOT HEAT TO THAW! Heating may degrade the active ingredient and reduce the
effectiveness of VERDI-CAREâ„¢." "(126) Q: What is the shelf-life of VERDI-CAREâ„¢?
A: It is recommended to dispose of unused product within ONE YEAR after receiving it. Always store
VERDI-CAREâ„¢ in a cool, dark area away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze." Hmmmmmmmmmmmm contradiction?

It's not a contradiction. Freezing will not harm the product but we do not recommend storing the product frozen or refrigerated. It's pretty simple really.

Thad, after I tried to read as much as possible on this topic-- I have a question. Simply put (and I will let it marinate in my brain) Can verdigris grow ON a carbon spot? Furthermore, would it be correct to say cupric oxide spotting is the result of advanced verdigris?

Hey I just had an idea, who wants to fly a chopper over lady liberty and give her a verdi-care bath with me?

Verdigris can only grow where copper is available. I've never seen it grow on a carbon spot.

Cupric oxide is not really verdigris and it forms on its own. If the conditions are dry and air exposure it high, it can form. You can often see it on copper, hot water pipes. The heat keeps the copper dry. Verdigris cannot form without water because the formation of copper hydroxide is critical to its growth.

The statue of liberty NEEDS verdigris to survive. The even coating actually forms a protective barrier on the surface. Without it, the chlorides in sea water would keep eating away the copper until it was gone.
