Personally, I think it's overgraded.....I'm trying to decide whether to crack it open for my album or send it back. I'll post the grade a little later tonight.

AU55 hmm.... I guess a weak strike? I was going back and forth because I wasn't sure how much of it was wear and how much of it was just a weak strike. But the luster seems pretty decent so it couldn't be very much wear I guess.

The obverse looks much more "mushier" than the reverse. However; there is still feather detail on the reverse. XF requires 60 percent of the feather detail to be present. This has all the feather detail present.....just soft. So it has to be AU and a really, really soft strike. Something Frisco was known for during the Peace dollar days.

hard to tell from a pic but it might just have enough to bump it from xf45 to an au50

Thanks for the response jmkendall . And yeah, I actually read about the weak strikes for S mint after making my guess (originally I thought that problem was specific to a particular series, not everything from the S mint).

I can see the feathers being the first detail to fade with wear, and therefore a coin with 100% feather detail is probably AU, but I'm surprised that you say "it has to be AU" because of this fact. Can't it be possible that the obverse wears faster than the reverse?

Either way I should have realized the feather detail was the key. I did notice that the feather wear was the most consistent detail but I just didn't think anything of it because I was so focused on whether the obverse was a very weak strike or wear.

Interesting coin to grade, thanks for posting it. Are you going to crack it out?

Slightly weak strike, little wear, good residual luster.

I think AU-55 is the correct grade. When assessing a coin, it is important not to confuse strike with wear. Most Peace dollars were poorly struck.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

I think I will crack it out of the slab....I purchased the coin for XF45 money....so I am happy with it. It will fit nicely in my AU album. Thanks again!

I was going to say XF45, mostly due to the circulated overall appearance
Nice coin though

I'm no expert on Peace dollars but I think I would pass on it as an AU55
