Beautiful coin. Sorry to do this, but I have a dumb question... what exactly is "tab toned"?

I would assume it has to do with the way coin the toned with a little tab left untoned or I guess a large tab that did tone the coin. Guessing thought?

No need to apologize. These coins were originally distributed in cardboard holders that were used as a way to display or store them since they were really commemorative, and not really for circulation. If they were left alone for decades in these holders than they developed this type of toning. Its also an indication that the coin is original, uncleaned and not dipped, That's why I like them so much. In some cases they can command a premium for being tab toned as long as its not too dark.

I was going with MS66 ... truly ... but never saw the coin until it got moved to this forum.

Lovely Delaware half ... did you know that the "Old Swedes Church" shown on the obverse still exists in Wilmington, DE and is still in service as a weekly place of worship.

Great coin ... thanks for sharing.

Very nice coin! I agree, some coins with tab toning can have very strong eye appeal -- even to this fan of brilliant coins!

I'm curious about the cardboard holder that you showed. It's not the official holder/mailer used by the Delaware's sponsor -- did you purchase the coin in that particular holder? Did the dealer from whom you purchased it provide any back story on it?

Thanks for sharing!

No, I wish I had a story to go with it. I bought it on ebay already in the PCGS Holder. The picture is just a generic one from a google search.

@travis2005: OK, thanks for the update.

Here's a link to my post on the Delaware - it includes a picture of the official holder -- thought you might be interested.

Wow, yeah that is very interesting. Is it possible to find these old holders anymore. I have not seen any situation where a Classic Commemorative comes with its original mailer and holder. Pretty cool, thanks for showing me that.

@travis2005: Yes, you can still find the holders on occasion -- sometimes with the coin, sometimes without. The holders are far more scarce than the coins, but with diligent searching can be found via dealers and auctions.

Good luck!

How many of these Delaware commems ended up in Sweden to go along with their commem?
