Not that lucky. The only square pattern penny that I have was cut from the centre of a copper cored nickel plated medallion. The right size and weight, but after cutting, the copper centre is obvious.
The value of my square coin collection is probably more than the sum total of it's parts. Nevertheless, almost all of them are common. I just had a lot of fun putting them together.
Actually, I know a guy who has a complete set of pattern square pennies and halfpennies. (Not the silver ones, though). Used to be a coin dealer, advertised regularly in the Australian Coin Review. Very old gentleman now. We are members of the same car club.
When THAT lot comes up for auction, the whole of the Australian numismatic market will know....!
R-Dawkins: What I am saying is that you can have a lot of fun with numismatics, without spending any significant money.
The more valuable coins in my collection may have to be disposed of before or after I die, but I would prefer to have my square coins buried WITH me!

Very sporatic over the years. Sometimes going to 4 coin shows a Month. Other times not paying attention to coins at all. Just to many things to do around here.

I have only been collecting for a couple years and have probably never gone longer than a couple days without buying or coin roll hunting a new coin for my collectiom.

i agree you dont have to spend money to enjoy numismatics.. what I've been doing lately is cataloging the coins in the junk collection and taking higher quality scans of the first coins I got (when I didnt really know how to take proper pictures and stuff)... its just frustrating I guess when you have gaps in your series and you see a coin for sale but cant buy it..
ive always liked those australian square pattern pennies but have never seen or held one.. probably never will. lol

I'd go with 1 month. although being a student I don't have a large budget for itch scratching purposes, so I tend to buy cheap coins that I find interesting.

I never go too long without "scratching the itch" as if I cannot purchase anything numismatic-related at all I can still pick through my pocket change. :-)
Or pick over a CoinStar for anything missed.
Or go through the couch cushions... of friends or relatives... :-)

In 25+ years of collecting? Possibly about 4-5 months. Even when I decided to leave the UK and was back-packing around the sub-continent and South-East Asia I would always try to sniff out a supply. When the backpack became too heavy I would discard items of clothing I felt were by then unnecessary. So denims, then my walking boots (I had by then decided to stay in the tropic zones) then a couple of books. By the time I had 'settled' I was already schlepping around about 15 kilos of coins. I do start getting a bit cranky if I haven't picked up anything after 1 or 2 months but then something always turns up. A friend recently returned from South Africa with about 300 coins from his grandfather. A few, very nice, colonial coins from West, East Africa and Rhodesia. Mmmm...nice.

I'm a bit like that. That is why my numismatic interests these days are so all encompaasing. My collection is composed of all coins, up to until about 1950, ancient to modern. Not really into NCLT, tokens or medals, although I have a few of these, too.
That way, always something to look at. I am a generalist, not a specialist. Also explains why I post on so many sub forums in the CCF.

"By the time I had 'settled' I was already schlepping around about 15 kilos of coins." WHAT? now that's a bit much @Peter, we are having an unusually chilly winter here in South Africa so had to install extra heating pads and decided to go ahead and just rebuild a nice terrarium for "Dexter",my grumpy red tailed boa.. @dsfreeworld... THAT IS THE EXACT PROBLEM I HAVE! a really sick cycle.. I've sometimes made up excuses not to go on dates with my girlfriend so I could secretly buy coins instead.. its sad
