seems overpriced based on 2012 volume 66 Charlton. Which lists 1913 $5 VF-20 $400, Yours is VF-30...but for $450 Charlton lists AU-50. Great looking coin though and welcome!

In my experience lower grade (VF and under) Canada $5 gold coins trade pretty much at slightly over bullion value.

Coin shows, and coin show auctions. Also, seeing the coin before you buy it is nice....

Coin Cabinet is fine to deal with... good coins (the father is ex-RCNA president, multiple times). You do pay full price on the internet though, so it's rare to get a deal.

You can find some deals here in the sales section once you get to 50 posts. ebay can be good but you HAVE to be patient, do your home work, and walk away if it gets too expensive. A good relationship with a local dealer helps; particularly if they have a clearance bin. And joining a coin club or finding a network to buy/trade with.

Don't rely on annual catalogues for more than a general price guide; prices are volatile for many coins. As previous posters have mentioned, use CCF Trends, http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php, and search completed listing in ebay for more up to date information.

My first buy was a 1943 British 3d for about $2. I bought it just so I could say 'Thruppence!' to my kids.

Well, next time just borrow a catalogue from the library. I know that some prices aren't as accurate as expected, but they still help a new collector.

WELCOME after all.

@wade....exactly what I was going to say, looks like it should be higher than VF-30.

Just received the coin.. definitely looks higher than VF-30.. looks almost uncirculated and the details are almost perfect as well as original lustre. I'll take pictures later, I'm obviously no expert at grading..

well ~ $450 Is Not Too much compare where you bought it .

Seller Need to pay ebay and Paypal the "Final value Fee" on the item they sold. it's about 15%

so basicly you bought an item thats valued around $382. Seems Good to me.

But you can probably Save up around $50 For contact buyer to trade face by face or through Paypal Invoice only.

That's a good looking coin and I agree with everyone that the premium that you paid for it isn't bad.
Welcome to collecting!

I also strongly feel that it is poorly graded at VF30.

The reverse is slightly better than the obverse.

Overall, at least some sort of low EF grade.

Clearer pictures are a much better help. Thank you.
I have to agree that the TPG got it right.
There are only six diamonds to be seen in the headband of the crown. VF.
The reverse is better. Not quite EF.
Still, this is a handsome coin.
