The reverse high points appear to have rub on them. I'm going to call this one an AU-58. The tone is nice, but won't boost the grade.

You've got some nice toning! Definitely more pictures with be helpful. I can't say for sure but my first impression, based more on the reverse since the toning may or may not be obscuring things, is an AU-58. It appears there may be a little bit of wear on Liberty's left leg and some friction in the fields behind Liberty. The reverse appears to have some friction in the fields, eagle's wing, and eagle's breast.

i agree that it looks like an AU coin I have many examples of walking libertys looking like that, never thought anything more of them - give it in see what happens that way ill know if my walking libertys should be higher grade

Quote: I read online in my research and looked at MS68s on NGC and PCGS and they were touting the blues and greens that those coins had. Looks like this to me, no?
Toning is independent of the Sheldon grade unless the toning is so thick as to impair luster and that would cause a downgrade at the MS level.

Don't feel like your wasting anyone's time. We all got to where we are today with time, no one is born a master numismatist. What you have to understand about the grading companies is that there not handing out top grades like candy. Keeping their population numbers down keeps the prices up. I would take your time with your free submissions, I usually won't even send in a coin for grading unless it's a $200 or more coin. Keep posting here, keep reading other posts in the grading forum and pretty soon you will be able to grade like a champ. I don't really like photogade for high grades, seems like most have toning which can make it hard for beginners to see the subtle differences between grades.

As far as the grade of the coin... I can't tell if it's wear, weak strike (common with this series) or a combination. If there's any wear, I have to think it's AU58 with that much luster. If it's MS, I think it's about MS63.

dsfreeworld I know the response from many of us regarding the coin being only a nice AU was very disappointing to you. Do not feel that it was a waste of time though. Anytime you walk away with more knowledge, it can not be considered a waste of time.
Any time you buy an uncirculated coin, make sure you turn it in many directions in good light so that any minor surface wear shows up. A weak strike will have continuous uninterrupted luster, one that has seen minor circulation will break that luster on the high points and will also show some friction and contact marks. I did see that in your first photos on the reverse. The heavy tone on the obverse made it a little harder to see that in your photo but the later photos you posted now show that.
Still a nice AU coin that would fit an AU-BU set.

The funny news is that this came in a bullion investment hoard. My "cost" on this is $11.16. I buy junk silver by the boatload and typically in true "un-searched" hoards and have been doing so for quite some time. I have pulled more MS/AU Franklins/Walking Lib Halves than I can count. I just really thought the toning on this was unique. I am new to collecting but I have been a silver bug for a long time and recent hoard searching through canvas bags I have had for a long time have been turning up numismatic coins I never knew I had. If you check some of my other posts you will see them.

Wing rub + rim dings on the obverse + high point rub on the obverse = AU58 to me

This was not a waste of time for me. I know very little about this series so I take every opportunity I can to read these threads.

dsfreeworld at 11.16 you got a bargain. When metals are hot and moving up fast, dealers tend to dump all slow moving silver coins into the melt bucket as they can turn a quick profit and not have the money tied up. Lots of nice collector coins and sometimes better dates can be found in those bullion lots.

I don't know anything about grading WLs, but it certainly is an attractive coin, so in that respect it's priceless,
