Fake or not I just can't see taking a chance with that much money for something on ebay.

That's the bottom line. This is a good thread though for educational purposes.

That's why I like to post threads like this...it opens up great discussion and education for those that would like to learn the diagnostics of a genuine 1877. Like any key date, there are plenty of counterfeits out there. There are plenty of lower to mid-grade genuine TPG'd coins out there. You can always crack it out later but you know you have the real deal ;-)

It looks real to me .. the 2 Ns on the reverse are weak and the 7s look o.k.

I definitely agree with Dave and Carl (and others); you really can't shell out that kind of cash
on a raw coin that has a history of being counterfeited, through ebay, without assurances. Like let me get it slabbed type assurances. Sadly that's the world we live in. When I get mine it will be from someone I know or certified.
Always enjoy you additions Dave

With ebay and almost any place on the internet, if no real guarantee, it is to much like gambling. Might as well buy a lottery ticket with the money.
To many fakes, lost in mail, wrong coin sent and so many other possible problems. For a few dollars, maybe, but when it gets into the hundreds or more, just to scarry.

Perhaps it's nothing, but those bright, deep scratches on the obverse strike me as odd.
I'm sure a real expert like Rick Snow could tell from the pictures, but with the rest--better to buy slabbed.
It would be pretty easy to wear down a fake coin to hide the markers, such as the reverse clash marks, and still make a nice profit on a scrap of bronze.

The coin looks good to me. 7's look right, weak N looks right, wear pattern looks right.

And the first 7 can't be altered from a 9, wrong hub type for that.

I dont know enough about the coin to say either way but the date does look off. Specifically the top left portion of the first 7 is a bit curved instead of straight up and down. That might be lighting or the angle of the pic (or just something else I don't know about the coin like some variation), but there's definitely a difference in my eyes. Also, the bottom or "leg" of the 2nd 7 looks fatter in comparison. That said, the wear pattern does look perfectly normal.

Here's a PCGS G04 for comparison:

Saying its like gambling probably makes some people want to buy the coin more ... lol

14 day return policy and in the description he says, in bold, "Returns on individual coins are always accepted". Is that something he recently changed?

Hmmm...the date could be flattened due to wear, but I still say it would be much easier to fake a coin in this grade than one with diagnostics showing.
