I recall that video posted here Merc, as I remember he said he makes like 800 to 1000 a week in what he finds in the gutters and side-walk outside of jewelry stores and such....

Knowing Craigslist it's probably 10K/GF and the rock will be a Swarovski. Utility-wise that's a great deal for the other guy.

Great call Libertad as if I am gonna attempt this or other like it in future, I need to buy a diamond tester as I got the gold end covered....
Never looked, but I am guessing they are pricey....

Good luck with that trade, Hawk. Hope that it works out well for both parties. That is the mark of successful business, IMO.

Thanks Ed, I agree when all parties leave happy, it is a good deal for all.... I found this auction for a diamond tester and neat 60x loupe with a built in LED light. All for $16.50, figured that was a fair price and did not even research it, and the free loupe with the led sold me.... Sixteen bucks and some change is pretty meaningless in the bigger picture of things, and no telling how much that may pay off in time, as far as not only proving something is real, but preventing me from doing a deal on something that is not real.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/23081599561....m1439.l2649

Sounds like you know what you're doing, Hawk. Does he have the original receipt? Probably not fenced, right?

Here is a decent image of the V necklace and I think most all of us would agree it would be a good acquisition if the diamonds are indeed real and it is indeed real solid NON plated or filled 10k gold....

Looks beautiful. Problem is, I couldn't tell you if it's worth $500 or $5000, Hawk. I knew you were fluent in coin values but how did you gain your knowledge of jewelry? Assuming it's legitimate, will it be hard to turn over? You mentioned it was worth 1K. Is that what you'd sell it for on ebay? Just curious. Oh yeah, when Kay appraised it, I don't suppose they put the appraisal value in writing? Guess I'm suspicious by nature. IDK, if something's seems too good to be true...

Keep us posted on the diamond tester. At that price I'd like to have one if it's reasonably reliable.
I'd be skeptical of any appraisal by a retail jeweler, especially a chain like Kay's that has regular sales. If I had to guess that's retail replacement cost. You could probably buy the same item on sale for 50-75% of that.....& their cost is probably in the $100-200 range.

Buy it just for the gold. If the diamonds are less than 40 points each, forget total weight, and clear of any carbon you will likely not profit on them.

NUMBER ONE RULE ON ANY JEWELRY APPRAISAL MADE WITH INSURANCE IN MIND, assume the item is worth 20% of their statement. So if they say it is worth 1000, then 200 bucks is safe estimate, and that is the common formula in the collector world.... To answer your question on the jewelry knowledge T, I learned much about jewelry at Southern bullion, and even more now at the gold buyer kiosk. As we deal in fine jewelry more often then coins or bars, like say 90% of the time to 10% of theme in average. Am I an expert, by no means. But I learn fast, and learning more every day. And if one understands hallmarks, magnets, then acid test, and has a loupe and a diamond tester, pretty hard to sneak anything buy me fake, being ultra thick plated, like some of these gangster chains.... It was a local jewelry store in Severville who appraised it by the way (not Kay's, my mistake), as he lives in Gatlinburg T.N., and of of course that is the surrounding county, so his story matches up thus far and he seems like a real simple father who is just over 50 and has for a 15 year old son. Same road I am on now, needless to say.... My plan was to just flip them at my gold stand, as I wont make a ton at like 80% an probably would get more by waiting on ebay if everything does size up.... But it helps my store and our monthly numbers. We were like 9th out of 11 stores beginning of month, and since I started we have moved up to 3rd of of 11 district stores in the Virginia's and T.N.. We have contest incentives, like an extra couple hundred for my manager at the Kiosk he could keep all for himself, but offered me half if we hit our 1st goal for the month. I already got a 20 buck bonus on a Friday for having the best single day of one particular contest.... The Dm told my manager that he gave me some extra for bonuses on my check, over 150 worth. And it is not like I am getting rich, but their check is right about what I was making at Southern bullion average out after the first one, so it fills it purpose thus far.... Another-words with what I got in the records an chainsaw, I can bet you if this is real gold and diamonds I will make a profit even selling to my kiosk at say 600 for example, just a ballpark guess.... The general trade up rule is begin with an item or items worth anywhere from 100 to 300 max and shoot for something more valuable....

Quote: Thanks Ed, I agree when all parties leave happy, it is a good deal for all.... No problem, Hawk. Yeah, it's a little like politics. When both sides of an agreement are a little unhappy with it, you know that it is probably about as good a deal as can be made.
