A lot of these shady characters would be looters and would be prepared to shoot you, in such a situation where the police would be overworked.

There is a risk that the Police would confuse you with the looters.

If you wish to do good community service, see the authorities first

Good points but a piece of Kevlar and some nice weapons and looters, thugs, and the police will be the least of your worries

I think if you went in tooled up like that I would imagine your life span would be measured in seconds if the police were involved

Obviously many have not been in such a situation. On serious note, there have been many such or similar situations. In every one, coins for Numismatic purposes were the last thing people would think of. Remember when Martin Luther King was shot. Massive riots broke out in some large cities. Looters were running rampant and aside from burning buildings, there were stealing TV's, Radios, cameras, etc. Police were eventually told to shoot to kill.
Of course this was not a NATURAL DISATER.
In those places where Huricanes hit large cities, again, possibly the last thing people thought of was saving a coin or coins. Food, clothing, water, etc. came far before a coin collection.

I have to agree with Carl. Most people that would be looting will be going after food, clothing, water and electronics.

Since I live in the middle of nowhere, I would just go about my daily life

Your in the best situation "ONEJINX" your already set ;) just sit back and relax,
-Just carl- Good research, think you know where your at :) lol

As for shooters on looter's , I'm aware of all those factor's , (already have my own coins and mixed PMs,and basic's at hand and a little education in this area, to at least get a few steps ahead of those so desperate and greedy last minute on to find everyones beena little too greedy ,ignorrant and selfish for a minute to long)
I'm in Australia and know most here are also :)(lucky for me as in this situation gun are'nt around as much as North Amercia and other nation's)bad thing is ,the really greedy and bad people do and will make advantage of this.

I'd never "save" or "steal" rare item's as not in my DNA,and know it would end up being High risk of danger also.
If there was such a event, and choas, i'd only save it if I came back to find it, with no one around that owns it,and needed to be "saved" for the future history books,lol...would also brighten my dull cave in the moutains up ;)

Is'nt the fun of collecting coin's and bullion? finding rare or interesting ones by chance

Does personally safeguarding and gathering public coins count as looting or preservation?

Realistically, I'd be more concerned about my stuff and ensuring the survival of my familily than to worry about public coins especially if there is a break down in public order.

What the heck have you been smoking? Pipe dreams I say. History will call you a looter even if your intentions are good. Lets think about this for a few minutes and take a few deep breaths. In the event of a natural catastrophe I will be taking care of my family. More precious than gold or silver.

Are these coins ours or are we to go and get them from other people?

Thats why you only save them after the aftermath if there still around to be saved, family first(always) food, water, and trade will help ,

Can't count on the police to be there in a large scale natural disaster...they will have their hands full. You have a right to protect your life and property from thugs. Here in Southern California, we are expecting a large scale earthquake sometime in the near future, when is the question. I have plenty of weapons, food, water, first aid supplies, to last several days. My coins would be the least of my worries I suspect although I have to admit, at some point, I'd be thinking about them ;-)

I think in the event of a natural disaster your time would be better spent rescuing people rather than coins or bullion

I've always wondered what happened to all the different types of collectables when such things happen. For example all those Huricanes in our South that distroyed massive areas of homes and buisnesses. And not just hobby type items but new cars, planes, furnature, kitchen items like plates, etc. Oil paintings on walls, clothing, watches and on and on with items we so much charish from day to day.

Well, hopefully my big-arse 600 pound fireproof gun safe will be kinda like the "black box" and it'll survive most disasters (I don't think that those/my safe is water-tight so a flood would actually be worse than an earthquake, meteor or atomic bomb ... hmmmm, it's actually kinda nasty to think about it, eh? ...

=> but I agree with trout1105 => although I love my coins, I'm pretty sure that the surrounding carnage and desperation would win-out over my greed to protect my "precious" coins!

=> oh, and my big arse safe, stuffed full of wonderful coins would merely be "a wonderful ancient find" in the year 2305 ... right?
