HelzelsCoins - MathieuMacolonialjohn is actually one of my two partners in the book on Portrait Colonial 8Rs. John Lorenzo from New Jersey. My other co-author is lurking about someplace here on the forum as well. But I have not yet heard what his screen name is. He is a new member. Gordon if you see this perhaps you should introduce yourself. The text of the book is nearly complete and I expect to complete the first draft shortly. Editing and printing will take longer. 2013 is a good date. I do want to review all of my posts on this forum and others to see if I have missed anything that needs to be said. But if I go much farther we made need to grow some more pulp trees to make paper. The section on counterstamps is rather brief - there are only TWO examples that we have located to date that are contemporary forgeries. The others are either REAL or MODERN JUNK FAKES. The fakes outnumber the real ones on ebay by 10 or 15 to one. I will include 4 or 5 of the types with the percussive impression on the back side for reference. Some that are on this thread may in fact be used as they are beautiful examples.

SwamperBob,
I loved your fake example number 5, of the Peruvian coin with the Guatemalan counterstrike. I actually have a (real) one, and whoever made that fake couldn't even get our national crest right.... It's actually kinda funny looking, and appears to be rather large for a 1/2 real. You should see the fakes down here. I can buy all kinds of 'colonial' pieces for Q150 or less, or about USD$18. Some of them are actually pretty good.

JMerrick I would be very interested to see some of the counterfeits you speak of. We are doing a book on colonial fakes so if any are Portrait types Charles III, Charles IV or Ferdinand VII I would be VERY interested.
Let me know.

Swamper,
I'll try to get some pictures, and if you want actual examples, I'm more than happy to pick them up for you, at cost, plus shipping. (I use a freight forwarder to Miami). Just give me a little gratuity if I actually catch something real in the land of fakes... :) My big concentration down here is finca/hacienda tokens, because the Colonial stuff is just too scary to touch. It is cheap though. I might even throw in a bag of coffee from the other side of the lake some time. I understand Costco is selling the same stuff for like $15 a lb., and we pay about $5, (Q40)

JMerrick If the pictures look interesting I would be in the market to buy them - about what is the average cost?

Hi Bob,
I'm up for a swap if you have an undamaged early Zacatecas piece, similar to the host used for the Norte and SJNG counterstamps. Let me know.
Cheers,
Roman.

Usually, anything "Colonial" goes for Q200, or less, often Q150, which is about $18, for an 8 Reale. Anything smaller is of course less. The guys who sell the pieces are kinda like the guys who stand around subway exits, and have 12 watches on each arm, and wanna sell you one. Obviously, their business model is far from appealing to me.
Guatemala is also not a terribly coin friendly country, as the indigenous love bright shiney pieces of metal, and will take a wire brush to anything, resulting in some tragic messes, and they are bewildered you'd pay them 5 times more if they'd just leave the coin the way it was.
I get very, very lucky with the finca/hacienda tokens, because most people hate them, because they were issued by wealthy landowners, so if they haven't gone into the trash, people will almost throw them at you, to just take them. I have several examples that are apparently 'unknown'. At some point, I'll end up writing a book on the Finca Tokens of Guatemala. It's a pretty obscure subject, and I'm one of 3 people I can find in Guatemala who even collect them, and my collection is at least 100 times larger than either of the other two. The tokens do deserve recognition, as they represent a large amount of the history of our country.

I finally got a copy of the BOOK. Nice read - poorly written and so many errors it is not funny. He even gets the stamps mislabeled in some cases.
But I will also be including this Catalog in section $ of my upcoming book with a caution as what not to buy. Just need more help regarding who exactly is behind this scam.

Swamperbob : check what have been posted on the facebook group - we have two other references with more crap in there. As to who is behind, Ralf have done some investigation - it seems someone have been using a name which is not his own ... We suspect Juan Melgar is behind this book, but we can't be sure (what's sure is that he sells it, and has many fake counterstamps on auction) Here are the files : https://www.facebook.com/groups/monedafalsa/files/BTW, if you didn't noticed, here are two more fakes - which we suspect come from the same source (same style and so on) - on auction from a "serious" ebay seller (at least not used to sell crap). I warned him about it, he god the coin from someone in spain, and is reselling it ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/EXCELLENT-A...150932439418http://www.ebay.com/itm/SCARCE-SPAI...150932442563760 USD and 300 USD as of now ...
