obverse could be as the seller claims....it's hard to tell. However even if the obverse is PL it still would not receive a PL designation. The obverse and reverse need to be PL in order to receive that designation.

The obverse may be PL but I don't think the reverse is.

It is very hard to tell with pictures like that.
If you are looking for a 1880-S PL Morgan, don't just buy the first coin you see. This coin is very common in higher grades, and quite a few can be found in PL and DMPL at reasonable prices.

I agree, but it's still a pretty neat coin if it goes cheap enough. I'll put my bid in and see what happens. The seller seems pretty confident it may be undergraded, do you guys think it may have a shot at upgrade?

No, that coin is not PL. The lighting is playing a trick, but it appears to have full luster. I would be certain this would never make it in to a PL holder. And I think the reverse would keep it from upgrading or CAC'ing.

I highly doubt this will upgrade. Looks like a 64+ to a very low end 65. IMO, I think this coin has a greater chance of downgrading than upgrading.

Its a beautiful coin number one. Number 2, who gives a rats butt if it would get a useless green wart?
But to the point, hardly PL. I see nothing at all reflective in any of those pics. But, as I said, its a beautiful lady.
An MS65 is valued at 200, so its getting close. With 9 bids and still 4 days to go and at 130, I would guess it will go over value. Personally I would take it up to value, but certainly not over.

It is what it is. A Morgan graded MS65 in a rattler is most likely an MS65. If you want a PL move on to one that is. There are plenty out there.

I don't think it makes 66 - too much chatter in the fields - and it's at market right now. Me, I'd move on to the next coin.

Here is the list: SL - Satin Like SPL PL DPL DMPL
I have a copy of a printout somewhere that I used to measure the reflectivity on my morgans over the years. It had backwards written text in different size fonts and instructions on what type of lighting to use and how high above the coin it was placed. Then a gauge to check the distance in inches that one with normal eyesight could read the print. Now I have to find it :) NGC and PCGS do not concur with one another on the distances for PL and up. Best I had heard of was a morgan at 12"

it's almost over and I put my max bid in so we'll see if it's a good deal when I get it, if I win it.

Nice coin and I agree with all here, Not a PL. Rattlers have that on the grade if it is PL or DMPL Both sides need to qualify for either designation. Bob

yeah I see nothing that would make this coin a PL and definitely see no indication it would ever upgrade. I think they were generous with the 65 as it could have clearly graded MS-64 and would have made a nice 64. I think it went a little high on the price for the coin as this is a very common date and allot of nicer ones out there for that price
