Saw this coin today at a CP office. The have this little plastic bag in the tube for whatever reason. The coin itself looks rather nice but not at almost $130, it's too expensive

Is there any necessary to issue this one? if they need topics, they should consider firefighters, soldiers in Afghanistan instead of coast guard.

Nice call on the firefighter one. I'd love to see that.

That's neat. I've seen a few before. Thinking its Australia that made them?

It appears to be the Perth Mint, so yes, its an Aussie coin.

How are these coins doing now? I bought one long ago and was wondering if they've held their value

CA presently has one listed for $84, original issue price $130. Seems to be holding its own as good as can be expected. Sold listings on ebay, a good 2nd reference. Did yours come with a piece of steel? How unusual....."Accompanying each coin is a piece of steel from the pre-refit bow of CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent..."

Thanks for the post,
Yes, the coin came with a plastic container with a piece of steel in it and both were in a wooden box. To my memory, it doesn't mention much if anything about the steel piece or what it is. I'd have to double check since its been awhile seen read the COA.
Rest in Peace

As I was a member of the Canadian Coast Guard - This coin served two purposes for me. I was the same age in 2012 (50) and working within the organization. I picked up a couple of these as soon as they were available. I don't know if it actually says it on the COA, but from the mint's own website:

Each coin is accompanied by a vial containing a small piece of steel from the pre-refit bow of CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent taken during its refitting to keep the vessel operating until its replacement can be commissioned in 2017. This refitting process is symbolic of the life-cycle of all CCG ships, making the steel piece an exceptional memento of both the history of the Canadian Coast Guard and the historic CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent.

Also from the Mint's web-site: 87% of 7500 coins sold - so that is only 6525 sold. Kind of low IMHO, but still a very narrow market for collectors/Coast Guard people - so the current price is still dropping from the original $129.95.

I'm happy with my purchase. I'm not concerned with the drop in cost on this one. I'd rather the chunk of steel from a ship than a flashlight or fishing lure, etc.
