Haven't done a box of pennies in quite awhile. But with the thunderstorms the last couple of days, I brought a box home last night so I knew I'd have a source of entertainment. Among other things, I found a PAIR of 1940 Canadian pennies. I put them in my Canadian coin tubes.

I just set mine aside as well. Just checked and I've got most of the pennies for the period 1959 - 2005

This is funny. Up in Canada, we see soooooo many american pennies. I don't bother saving them unless they are wheats or the 2009 licoln series.

I agree with the above. We get a lot of American ones in the north. I keep all of them for times when I make trips to the states. Like stated above I typically only hold on to wheaties...really looking forward to a fluke indian head! That would be awesome!

If I find a Canadian penny in my bank wrapped roll, I put it back in the roll when I return coin. Those rolls I make sure I don't use a coin counter. The closer to the border the worse this is. At this point I may hold Canadian pennies simply because who knows how fast they'll disappear come September :(

What do you do with the Canadian pennies you find? I wouldn't feel right putting them back in penny wraps so I've just been putting them aside. Are they worth anything?

Conversely, do you feel right about buying foreign money at your bank when you're trying to get US coins? Remember you're not going to Canada buying tons of pennies only to return them to US banks. That would be a slightly different situation.

I used to throw them back until I found out some where magnetic and some weren't. The non-magnetic would go through, but magnetic would stick to a magnet and I'd lose those. So now I hold them all.

Does anyone know a good site to see values of these? I can only find mintage figures that show a simple idea... the older the less produced lol

One of the 2006 Magnetic varieties is supposed to be worth quite a bit.

I just keep them in a baggie with all my other circulated world coins I've come across over the years from traveling or family bringing them back when they travel. I may start a folder or something for them one day.

I got a little American penny stash going.
I get 4 or 5 wheaties in a box. Actually popped a 1920 Lincoln an hour ago. To bad it's a little chewed on one side.
I keep all 1982 and older for "bullion" lol, I pick nice examples out of this for my collection.

As far as 1982 and up, I just keep the pretty ones and look for a few varieties as I learn about them.

The rest go back in the rolls to the bank.

It does not bother me one way or the other, actually I like finding a few here and there.

Although it seems most or more USA pennies are zinc, compared to Canadian pennies, so from that point of view I would not want to many USA pennies. (1982 USA vs 1996 CANcopper cut off dates)

Right now its a decent proportion. Out of the Yankee pennies I find, 40% to 60% will be copper, generally older pennies.
So when all is said and done I only have to return maybe a roll or so of USA pennies to the bank, per box.

Actually the other Wheat's I find are in decent condition. Too bad this one is rough as it is my oldest 'merican find.
