I'd have no problem with junk silver either but a 1955 DD (if real) is a four or five figure coin based on condition. Too much imo to keep all to myself in that case. I'd only worry about how to pay more for the coin without losing out on the whole deal for trying to do something nice.
If we are talking thousands of dollars instead of just junk silver does your answer change? Does it change at ANY price?

VGRX: As previously noted, only in the case where I think the other party needs the money way, WAY more than I do. Would I take a five-figure coin from a single mama who's counting pennies for gas? No. She has babies to feed. Would I take a five-figure coin from some jerk in a three-piece suit who yaks on his phone the whole time he's at the counter and gets mad when I tell him I'm hearing-impaired and don't understand his mouthing? You bet.

VGRX, without my parents' support I couldn't put food on the table. I don't know where you got the idea I'm "well to do," but I'm so far removed from that concept I can barely see it with glasses on.

Anything is fair game in my opinion. I wouldn't say a thing at all. You are the one who has taken the time to invest in the knowledge so its only right that you are the one to reap the rewards.

I'm sure I've had things sold from under me or missed a great opportunity that someone else recognized.
If we have the knowledge, we can apply it. I think there will be moral boundaries, which may be up each individual person's point of view (i.e. roll of silver from an old lady), but otherwise, the person making the transactio is happy with what is happening. If they want to spend .25 face value in silver along with their dollar bill to buy a bottle of Coke, go for it.
If anyone's watched American Pickers, they buy an item from someone with a price they agree on, and sell it at a profit. Everyone in that scenario comes away happy.

I also laugh when they're tallying up the days picks and put 'valued at'. Whilst you do see a little bit of them selling on the show id like to see more of it. Maybe they could show some of the lots at auction etc.

It's fair game if they look like they lived in the 1950s/1960s or before. They would know the difference most of the time. Fair game if they spend it on vices (gambling, cigarettes, alcohol). Case by case analysis. Sometimes you can even turn people into collectors by telling them what they have.

Pulling coins from registers at face value is the best. Its right next to CRH, but without having to go through several rolls. Best I ever got was that roll of silver roosies out of a til from my work. Still my best find year to date.

VGRX, would I take food out of someone else's mouth? Of course not. To me, that's what taking a five-figure coin from someone in my position would be. If it was a "moderately expensive" coin (e.g. a Morgan), not such an issue.
Then again, if someone with my level of income handed me a five-figure coin, I think what I might end up doing, given where I live, is take it and call the police to make sure someone isn't missing the coin. If the answer was that it was a lucky find, I'd tell the spender that I'd looked it up because something about it "looked funny" and tell them they'd lucked out. If it was stolen, obviously, we have video and I'd have to give it back, but I've talked about Coin Karma and my firm belief in it before.
