Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

John F. Kennedy

The numbers represent the element in the periodic table, take out the letters after the number from the symbol.

E.g. for the first word 3I 34S 22I
The symbols are LiSeTi
Take out ISI and get Let.

Official Hint #1: D.I.M. 1869

I still don't know what this clue meant.

I'm not the brightest in the bunch...

I didn't use either hint, I just clued in to the numbers going up to 113, UT looked like a periodic table symbol in that range (since they all start out unun up there), so I started writing out the symbols, and noticed words within them. Lo and behold, the excess letters were the ones written beside the numbers in the code.

Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (D.I.M.) published one of the first periodic tables in 1869.

Actually, jg86, you have the code wrong. It's:

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty."

I saw the quote both ways and decide to watch the YouTube of JFKs Inaugural address to be sure that "in order" wasn't in the quote. It certainly wasn't in the code.

How ironic, I went to the internet about 10 words in, and copied and pasted it from the Wikipedia article "Kennedy Doctrine". I guess my teachers might have had a valid point when they said never to source Wikipedia!

I decoded the entire thing and saw the same thing you did on Wikipedia, but I also saw versions WITHOUT the words "in order", so I decided to watch the Inaugural Address on YouTube first. When I was sure, I came here and saw you had already posted the incorrect version. This sort of thing happens frequently. Armstrong said "One small step for man" instead of "One small step for a man".

It's entirely up to Moe to sort out this mess, but it seems to me it's like a game show when someone ALMOST gets it right and the next person grabs the prize! I claim that those Ikes are mine!

But let's also remember that jg86 won my last codebreaker for 2 of 4 Ikes I have to give away and graciously agreed to put them back into the kitty for a prize of all 4 Ikes on my next code. If I win these Ikes on a technicality, I propose to offer ALL SIX IKES as a single prize for cracking a code that Moe and I come up with TOGETHER. Sound fair to you, jg86? Moe, are you game?

All 6 is fine with me, like I said in my e-mail to you, it's more about the challenge than the prize. Albeit if the prize gets much bigger, it might become more about the prize!

JG86! Genius!

BUT.....

Larsdog had previously emailed me that he had broken the code before I noticed your deciphering and, as he has pointed out, your deciphering added the phrase "in order" which was not in my encoded message.

So... I declare Larsdog, the winner of Code Breaking Contest #7!!

You both very correctly figured out the clues and the encoding mechanism using the Periodic Table of Elements!! (The idea was given to me last code. It took awhile to figure out how to work it. I couldn't put JFK's name at the end of the code since there are no elements with J's in them! I got lucky with the other letters!!)

Lars/Bill, I still have your address, so if nothing has changed, I will ASAPly mail the Ikes to you when I return from the trip I am now commencing out of Minneapolis!!

Addition:

I really like you adding these new Ikes with the previous 4 to create a "Perfect Storm of Ikes"!! (Lars, the Ikes are yours to do with as you see fit. It think it shows tremendous class to want to pass these Ikes on to other folks!!)

I will await Larsdog's next code with baited breath!!

Thank you all for playing!!

(I knew that last clue was too much!! You all are JUST TOO SMART!)

OK, I'll work up a new code and the prize will be ALL SIX IKES. We will find a home for these fine fellows yet! It's not going to be overly complex, so everyone should have a chance at breaking it. Just continue following this thread. I will make an announcement here when it's ready! I'm going to limit free shipping to the U.S. or Canada, though. If you live elsewhere and want to guess, we should probably discuss shipping first.

Note to All (Including Lars): The 2 Ikes are in the mail to you.

I am eagerly anticipating your next code!!

(I already have the next one after that ready to go!!)
