It's still very interesting. I like how the Penny Arcade knew to spit it out.

I don't think it's a magician coin. Here's the reverse...

IMO its definitely a fake make not to fool collectors but the general public. Remember that counterfeiter doesn't really need it to stand up to criticism from multiple transactions, only the first time they pass it on. Its an interesting piece that you should definitely hold onto.

It looks like there is a seam on the edge below the date. Wouldn't it be cool if it popped open and there were microfilms of h-bomb plans inside?

If you can bend it easily, it may be a cast lead fake.

Nope. Iron and nickel are although it's weak in nickel. Most steels are highly magnetic because of their iron content.

I have to concur: Its features are consistent with being a counterfeit.

John, 6my grampa remembers working for a dollar a day in the 1940s and thinking it was good money. A quarter was two hours' worth of work for him, and would have bought him lunch with money left over at any dinor in town--two cents for coffee, a nickel for a cheeseburger, and a dime for apple pie afterward.

If we assume this is a contemporary fake, it was once worth quite a lot.

LTMets, could you take a head-on (not tilted) picture of the obverse? I think something's up with George's nose there, but it's hard to tell because of the angle. I'm already going with "fake," but having some visual markers would be nice.

ninamason - I will try to take a head on picture when I get home. I took these pics at night with the flash so it's hard to get a head on pic when using flash. I will take it out into the daylight and give it a go.

Some coin mechs are LEARNED by the inserting 3 times a coin of a certain composition.
You coin no doubt a Copy was of course not learned to the coin mechs little brain so it spit it out.
I have installed, programed and learned many coin mechs, most ownwers were quite unhappy when they learned Silver coins would be rejected.
even had some ask me to learn the mechs to accept 90% silver coins.
I installed these in car washs across the midwest about 9 years ago. No doubt they have only got better and more picky about the coins acceptted.
