Wow! You guys made my day! I've had this coin collection since I was a kid (I'm almost 40 now) and I just came across it in the garage last night. I actually had thought the collection had been lost years ago. The gold sovereign does make sense because one of my uncles took a trip to Australia and brought me back some coins as I recall. I have a few other Australian coins as well. This coin is in really nice condition - I would prefer to hang on to it. I believe I'll buy a proper plastic case for it and keep it in a safe place. Thanks again!

I nearly had a stroke when I saw that! Soon as I saw the reverse I recognised it.
*AHEM* I mean, yeah, definitely a penny. Ill give you a buck for it.
Incidentally, you just went from a nice condition penny worth a few quid to a £400 coin. Id recommend selling as gold is at such a high price and a new mine is being set up, but I love gold and you might be better off keeping it. Good to have family relics. If you do sell you could consider becoming a coin community supporter!
And grading isn't so important for Sovereigns, and this isn't too old so people will probably be buying for the gold. All considered, it looks great in the pictures anyway.

Thanks Ben! Wow, cleaning the garage really does pay off, haha. My uncle who gave it to me passed away years ago, otherwise I'd call him up and have a good laugh. The funny part is, I kept thinking it looked like gold, but... nah, couldn't be...

Wow! Awesome find!! What a day brightener!! As soon as I saw the picture I knew.. Wow.. Just wow... Congrats! Beautiful coin! Ya I'd definitely recommend getting a air-tite capsul for it, the gold is worth the $ bit you still want to keep it "pretty", lol. Congrats again!

Thanks! Yeah I believe I will buy a nice capsule for it as it's in super shape and really cool to look at. It's definitely a full (not half) sovereign, I measured it out. Reading back through the thread, I have to make one more observation. Ben from the UK commented that the coin "isn't too old" and is probably worth more for the gold. I think he's absolutely, 100 percent correct. But isn't it funny how Americans and Europeans define "old" so differently? To an American, a building (or coin) that is over a hundred years old is really, really old. To a European, that same building would be considered new construction! <grin> I might post a few other coins for you to look at if I think it's worth your time, but this one is definitely the gem in my collection, I believe. I wonder what else I can find in the garage today? :)

Ah, I'm kidding. I'm skint. But if theres a sovereign in there, I guaranty theres good stuff in there still hiding. You just havent realised (if you missed a sovereign, who knows what else has been passed over!). I recommend you get anything metal and photograph it for further advice from the people here.
I mean, C'mon, fake Ancient Greek coin and a sovereign? Thats a good mix there, you probably have some good stuff in the nooks and crannies.

Nice find watchingfromafar.BUT you said one of my uncles took a trip to Australia and brought me back some coins as I recall.And what you thought was JUST a 1901 penny,what else was there along with it?
lets hope there isn't a Krugerrand or an Austrian Philharmonica and you think its a EURO :-)

A half sovereign will be 19.5mm dia and a full sovereign 22.05mm.
Brilliant find from a garage.
All I find is mouse droppings.

Is that a small P I see on the bar under St George? This would mean it is from the Perth Mint in Australia and these can have a premium over the British version of the same coin. |

Turnstone, you have a great eye. There is indeed a "P" mint mark on the coin. Here's a better picture. On a side note, when I told my mother this story she reminded me that my uncle passed away exactly 15 years ago to the day that I discovered the coin (August 5th). Life is interesting sometimes, yes?
