If you can still get pennies in Canada finding copper is relatively easy because they go up to 1996. I once picked up 74 rolls that were 99%+ copper although that isn't common. I was up to ~30 000 copper pennies in a short period of time but my wife didn't like it. Also money was tight so it wasn't practical to have even a few hundred dollars sitting around. I'm now more of a cherry picker than a hoarder but the situation being only slightly different I can easily see myself with heavy plastic bags and buckets full.

I had a guy who would buy all of my copper for a fair price.

I have not head form him in 6 months and I am currently sitting on 250lbs of copper.

While I still separate it while roll hunting I think there may be a time where I will have to cash it in for face value of I can't find a buyer.

Times must be tough when doubling your money is no longer a good return and "I can't work for $20 an hour" is the current standard for high school dropout fast food workers since they can make more collecting welfare and food stamp handouts.

I used to actively hunt for copper cents and still keep the ones I come across, simply because I'm already checking for wheats/WAMs etc. and it's no extra effort for me. I stopped trying to keep track of value years ago... I have a ~4 gallon pretzel barrel so full that I can barely lift it.

The issue with copper cents is that even at 2-3 cents each, it's barely worthwhile to keep them from change and hard to justify spending any real time on the hobby. I fully expect to give them to my kids or grandkids when they become a novelty. Personally I don't see the point in trying to sell them--after shipping costs and the like, I'd see enough of a profit to take my wife and kids out to Olive Garden... maybe twice. If profit was my main concern, it pains me to say that my wife could save more through extreme couponing in a month than I could from a year of pulling copper at face value.

So, any copper cents you pull will probably go to the heirs to your estate. Do they really want 1,000 pounds of mucky copper cents to try to get rid of? Most of the "bulk wheat cents by the pound" websites and ebay listings claim to come from a "crazy old man who had $5,000 face in pennies in an oil drum".

Now there's a thought... I have an oil drum and my wife and kids call me a crazy old man.
Better start collecting pennies I guess.

hoarding...interesting word
when exactly are you considered a hoarder?
100 coins? 500? 1000? 10,000
pick a category
[1] you are a hoarder if you have more than me.
[2] It is hoarding AFTER I have all I want!
term used by the haves nots envious of the haves
[4] I do not collect more than I need..

your thoughts?

Perfect ! I admire you dedication , how long did it take to fill the bucket ? Were you pulling pennies from change only or did you add some from rolls ?

@Danhelmick98

Take those pennies into the bank and cash them in and buy silver. At this price you can't lose. You can always collect more copper pennies, Silver may skyrocket in the near future. Plus it is lighter (I filled 3 (5)gallon water jugs, I know how heavy they are) Just a suggestion.

I was able to get 3 $50 boxes of pre-1982 rolls at a local bank recently. Someone had sorted them by year and, apparently decided they weren't worth keeping and turned them all in for face. I have them now and am not quite sure what to do with them. Any suggestions?

Hmmm.. Well.. What was your reason for buying 3 $50 boxes of pennies in the first place? Did you just walk into the bank and say "I'd like $150.00 in pennies please"
