There are known "ghost" mint marks but not for 1965. They are from the 1990's late in that decade. Your coin does have what appears to be an S mint mark but it is an illusion not an actual mint mark, sorry. John1

Yep,I agree that an s can be seen on your coin. But if that is a mint mark is separate question.

I see an S but it looks larger than what the size of the mint marks were for the cents. No cent had an S mint mark after 1954 so it is highly unlikely that it was a leftover die from a previous year. It wasn't until 1968 that an S mint mark was used on the cents and then they were only on proof dies. If it were the remnant of a mint mark and was removed there should be a depression surrounding the S on the die which would translate to a raised area on the coin. It appears to be flat on your coin in the picture. Ed ANA LM-3175

This thread ... IMHO ... has gone well beyond the length needed for the CCF experts to advise the valued new collector of the facts ... This is a 1965 LMC minted at an unknown mint ... mint marks were not used that year ... and for sure there are zero 1965-S LMC out there. The imagined "S" on your coin might be there in some form ... but it is either an artifact of some surface disturbance ... or placed there by someone just for fun. This is NOT a 1965-S LMC. David

I agree that there is no way this coin would have an "S" because the San Francisco mint was not in operation in 1965. But I am sure I have some 1955 S Lincoln cents. With out going and looking it up, I think the San Francisco mint did start making coins again in 1968, there were some business strikes cents up to 1974. (let's not forget the 1970 S small date, one of the Memorial cent keys)

During the coin shortage in the 1960's the San Francisco mint was reopened and was minting cents. I am not certain if they started in 1965 but it was definitely before 1968 when mintmarks started appearing again. So this coin "could" have been made in San Francisco. But I agree with Nickelsearcher. There have never been any 1965-S cents reported before and this is highly unlikely to be the first.
It sure does look like an S mintmark (ghost of course).

And someone filed it off? Nah. I see the "ghost" 's' in your image too, but with Dave H. Imperfections in the coin's surface. Anyone up for some Rorschach tests?

The San Francisco mint did reopen in 1965 and they struck 220 million cents that year. They also did 39 million nickels, 47 million dimes, 62 million quarters, and 470,000 half dollars. None of them with mintmarks.

Quote: it was definitely before 1968 when mintmarks started appearing again There were no mintmarks used on any denomination from 1965-67, 1968 was the restart of mintmark usage on business strikes and the first official usage on proofs(not counting the few very rare branch mint proofs from the 1800s). Prior to 1968, the last S-mintmark cent was 1955.
