I have to say if it wasn't for the web and the information and availablity of ancients, I would have probably never started collecting ancient coins.

I deal with a lot of banks, have family that operates 2 large jewelery stores ( and they have friends with stores), pawn shops (mom and pop operations) and just looking around on the net.

I have bought each and every (crappy) coin that I own uncleaned. The first I got was at a carboot sale where a dealer had a box of romans and the rest were off ebay from Chimaira Antiquities. Very happy witht he seller, lovely guy, even allowed a request. |

I live in Northern Manitoba (Canada), so the chances of an ancient coinshow breaking-out somewhere in this part of the woods is absolutely "zero" ... => so I am forced to order everything via the internet ... luckily, I have one excellent source (my guy) and a couple of additional great sources (I pretty much stick to a small group of coin dealers that I've managed to build a certain trust with) ... otherwise, if I'm ever thinking of stepping-outside of my comfort zone I will usually post the coin here on CCF before I gamble and buy from an unknown dealer/source) ... Man, I "really" envy you dudes that live in centers where you have access to actual "coin shops" ... kickin' it old-school must be an absolute blast, eh?!!  Edited by stevex6

Thanks for all the responses. The intertubes really is a remarkable tool for the ancient coin collector in particular, but God I'd love to be able to wander in off the street and browse around in some pokey little shop for such coins. I went to a carboot sale recently, made a bee-line for the coin dealer and asked to see his ancient coins. Whereupon he pulled out a selection from the early 20th century! Would any of you mind letting me know of the people you deal with on ebay or other online sources? I understand if you'd like to keep 'em under wraps, but there's no harm in asking! |

Pretty much all of my coins come from online. Through this I've made friendships with some online dealers that I frequent. Only 3 or 4 of my coins come from this local coin show, which I haven't been to in forever.

I'm in southern illinois, so there aren't any close by coins shops that have ancients. I did find a place about 100 miles away that does have a few, but pretty high priced. all my ancient stuff has been from online, nice list jw.

Should be no surprise. When a dealer/seller has a good reputation and good deals, one would expect them to be on such a list. There are others I use as well, but the list was getting too long.

Coin shows and the internet are where most of mine come from. einhard, once you decide what it is you want to collect, search the internet and you will find many dealers that can offer what you need.
