I searched about £500 in two pence coins before I gave that one up. I had the same with a couple of the 5 pence pieces, the gap in my album was bugging me and so I just bought one on ebay from a seller who splits up sets. The missing 5 pence cost me £3 which may not be a particular bargain but was well worth it to save me looking at every 5 pence I get handed in change. If we estimated that some people who had the 1972 two pence in a mint set got robbed and some of the crooks didnt know what they had, so they busted them out and spent them, then maybe there are one or two around in circulation. These are very very long odds... you're more likely to win the lottery. |

Weeeeell, I do like a challenge, and I've only found full mint sets for sale (£30! Rip off!) so ill keep looking for it in circulation. If I find one, ill buy a lottery ticket. Anyway, I'm sure ill find something good eventually, 1972 or otherwise. Plus, I can always do this with the spares:  Ive misplaced the pictures of the...uh...larger things. For example, a tower much much larger than that on top of a 3p coin. Gotta do something with my time, havent I? |

They were also issued as proofs. You should find one for well under a fiver.

Years ago I also tried to find 1972 coins before I knew that there werent any issued into circultion, anyway has anyone had anyone had any luck finding a 1972 coin in circulation ?

I managed to find a 1993 5p in circulation a while back.
I've been collecting all the bronze 1p & 2p coins I come across for a couple of years...
maybe I should search through them to try and fill any gaps huh !!

You guys who collect 1p and 2p coins, do you keep them inside plastic or cardboard holders? How is that economically viable when each holder is probably worth more than the coin itself?

The holder can be reused.

My bog-standard year 'sets' go in little ziplock bags, except the £1 & £2 coins which go in trays. All my common errors go in bags too, but anything unusual goes in the trays. Fakes, type sets (£2/50p vareities etc) 'colonies' ie IOM, Gibraltar etc and some good circulation finds all go in trays.  As for my bronze 1 & 2p coins... I think I've got just over £10 worth... but tbh I'm not sure its worth keeping them. I may be better off keeping the cupro-nickel 5 & 10ps as they're actually being removed from circulation :/ Edited by Red

How should one value the penny from a 1972 proof set ?
The face value is 93 1/2 p.
There are 7 coins in the set.
Should the value of a penny be 1/93 of the value of the set and the 2p be 2/93 of the set ?
Or, should it be 1/7 of the value of the set ?
Or some other way (what) ?

Spink says each of the coppers £2 Silver £4/£5 Crown £6 so probably 20p 40/50p and 60p

so probably 20p 40/50p and 60p . There were 3 Bronze coins: 1/2p, 1p, 2p; the crown, and 3 other cupro-nickel coins: 5p, 10p, 50p. That adds up to £23; is that Spinks price for the set ? |
