fascinating article by Rob Turner on the melting of 20 cent coins. Could it be that instead of around 300.000 1858s surving melting only a little over 7000 survived? I consider them one of my favorite early Canadian coins and am thankful to have a single bueatiful example The other contraversy with these coins is the disputed mintage figures of 730.000 or so vs 750.000

There really is no dispute on the 20 cent mintage. There are multiple highly credible surviving documents that place the mintage at 730,392. The mint reports of the late 1800's published 750,000 which was based on the order size of 30,000 pounds sterling in 20 cent pieces. I provided the documentation in my first book.

With the possibility of only 1% of the original mintage still in existance what might this do if anything to prices? Though there always seem to be quite a few on ebay anytime I'm thinking of picking up another 1858

Although I quantified the supply, neither supply nor demand have changed. Both are the same as before I wrote the article. Should have no affect on prices.

I like the 20 cent so much I have collected most of the Newfoundland 20s up to 1912 then the .25 were made.

The demand keeps the prices up on this. It's the first "Canada" decimal coinage, a key date (low mintage), a single date type, and shares collecting popularity with the 25c series. It appeals to all sorts of collectors.

OK so when I'm not collecting copper, 1858 20¢ is my silver target! (don't tell anyone, I don't want the prices to spike!!)

6 years later they go for the same amount. If you take inflation into account, then the go for less. The same $1200 that bought a ms -60 20 cent coin isn't as powerful or can't buy as much as it use to.
