Obviously, it needs to be investigated. Acetone would be a good first step in that investigation.

From the pictures, I can't make up my mind if the extra design detail is a built up 'add on', with some sort of clear substance such as Araddite, or has been impressed into the coin.

How much does it weigh? My guess is that if it was an added on substance, the coin should weigh something like 10 to 20 milligrammes extra.

Is there any damage to the other side of the coin?

My first inclination is that this coin is a 'shed job', i.e. PMD.

I originally thought that it may be some kind of adhesive as well. After closer inspection I noticed that the 2nd and 3rd imprints of the Lincoln Memorial do not block any of the letters that they sit over. It appeared to me that maybe the 3 to 4 memorial strikes might be under the letters around the edge of the coin. That is what caught my attention.

The other side of the coin appears completely normal. No strange toning or marks of any kind.

Let's say the coin is a real error of some type... would acetone do any damage to the coin?

Have you noticed that most of the coin is brown while the affected area is still the original mint red color? That is one indicator that it is glue which covers the copper with an airtight layer and prevents oxidation. The extra bits of design are from another coin that was impressed in the glue and then separated once dried.

Yea, that sounds about right. I didn't want to do anything with it until I got a 2nd (or in this case 5th) opinion.

Thanks everyon!

If its an actual mint strike error acetone shouldnt do anything to it. If its fine for a normal coin it should be fine for an extra strike. I know a lot of members give their coins dips quite often, but might want to wait for someone with more experience in it to confirm this.

Its super glue. This is done to coins all the time. Acetone will not damage the coin and a soak in it will remove the glue.

I search through rolls all the time and this is the first time I have ever come across such a coin. Interesting none the less.

I agree it is glue. I search through many rolls myself and have see this often. You are lucky to just recently stumble on this. Make sure you hang around and show us more oddities you run into. Read the different threads on this site showing what others have found. Roll searching is fun and you will run into something valuable if you stay with it.

I vote for the glue. Probably used in some school project.
