I'm pretty sure these are both wide 0 but a closeup of each date would help. I find the best way to tell narrow 0 apart from wide 0 is actually to look at the 8 since the whole date is different. In the wide 8 the top and bottom inside circles are just about perfect circles (as wide as they are high). In the narrow 8 each inside circle is noticeable oval (higher than wide). I spent a bunch of time looking for the narrow 0 variety in circulation and have never found one. Last time we talked about this variety I don't think anyone could provide a narrow 0 example that was a business strike. My only example of the narrow 0 is from a prestige set: Narrow Date:  Bold Date:  |

I couldn't find a narrow 0 in circulation either.
I think these are both wide 0... Sorry.

Where are all the circulation narrow 0? I just looked through 1 1/2 rolls and they were all wide!

It's possible all are in sets, though I do recall a post here on CCF where maybe someone claimed to find a narrow 0 in the wild.
I get frustrated by varieties like this where it's so hard to believe you're striking out time and again, until you see the two side by side.
I think it's worth the 2 or 3 bucks to buy a narrow 0.

CCN trends does not list a price for circulation narrow O.They only have narrow O estimates for coins removed from sets.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

The easiest means to differentiate the two is to look at the inner circles, or holes, of the 8 in the date. In the bold or wide date, they are round. In the narrow date they are oval.

I'm looking to confirm the existence of a couple of coins that I'm having trouble finding, so I'm reviving this old thread to see if anyone can help. Have any of you ever found a 1980 "Narrow 0" 10 Cent business strike or a 1980 "Wide 0" 10 cent in any RCM set? On a similar note, has anyone ever found a "Near Beads" 1980 25 Cent business strike or a 1980 "Far Beads" 25 cent in any RCM set? Online and catalog resources do list values for these coins, however, I'd really like to know if anyone can provide first hand confirmation of these coins' existence. |

Charlton indicates both types can be found in business strike, but NO only in RCM sets. If NO can be found in business strike, it's either rare or a misgraded PL in my opinion. I found the distinction is easier to differenciate by examining the thickness of the edging rim, rather than the distance of the beads. But again Charlton indicates NB and FB can be found in both business and Uncirculated Sets. I also wonder regarding the business strike if this is true. |

Thanks for verifying the existence of the "Numismatic BU" Far Beads 1980 25 Cent Wildflower! I won't have to scratch that one from my need list.
