Why are the 2009 Lincolns going to be future key date coins?

I think the mintages are a lot lower(although still plentiful) than that of the Memorial Cents and Shield Cents. And only a 1 year issue. Either way, they will only be valuable in high grades like that of which the OP posted. IMO of course

Well then, it's a good thing I have some boxes from the US mint.

Nice buy. Nothing like getting a slabbed PF69 for 4.70 each. Probably cost more than that to have them graded. Now you can start your own registry set on the NGC site. edgman

Quote: Probably cost more than that to have them graded. Almost certainly. I suppose the seller is hedging and hoping to recoup those losses from the 70s.

I still can't figure why those copper cents never caught on...four unique reverse designs...95% copper content which is unique for a modern cent...low mintage..WAY below normal for a modern cent (771 thousand vs. 300 million of the regular 2009 cents)
..and the sets can still be bought for around or below the original Mint price...

Quote: Why are the 2009 Lincolns going to be future key date coins? Only because by 3009 most will have been put back into circulation from the millions and millions now being hoarded. I wonder what the 3009 ones will look like?

Quote: I wonder what the 3009 ones will look like? 3009? I think we have to work through some more "end of the world" scenarios before we consider what cents will look like in 3009. :) Oh and the fact that currency will not be physical at that point if we are still around to use money. Man... 1000 years into the future... will there even be money or will it be the money-less utopian world that Gene Roddenberry envisioned? I need to have another glass of scotch and then I'll get back to you on that. Hmmm....
