This is not a coin to just toss in a box, Richard!!

True but even I miss things when sorting through bulk purchases.

What is the shiny surface? Looks like lacquer.

, although IMO it might make AU-53/55 is surfaces are original. Shield lines, WE, & leaf veins all look strong. Nice looking coin

Nice coin! It looks like a large motto.
A large motto is worth about $75. Too bad it wasn't a small motto or it could have worth $825!

I agree with an AU grade. Surfaces look original and problem-free, with the possible exception of the darker areas on the reverse, especially below CENTS. Could be a sign of corrosion just starting up.

The shininess itself doesn't seem like a problem. I would probably want to soak this coin in acetone to eliminate the possibility of PVC or other organic residue causing future problems.

Nice find from the junk pile!

AU-53 most likely. The shiny surfaces are a cause for some concern, but we only see the still photo, a quick dip in acetone is what I do with every 2¢ piece I get raw, this will take any contaminents off the surface, which if left will grow into carbon spots, discolored areas, etc. won't damage the coin in any way if done carefully.

Agree with Jaboler.

I think somewhere between AU-50-55 looks about right on this thing but we all know you have a good eye for these things and I wonder what grade you assigned it when you saw it?

Dutch Boy Spray On Gloss or Semi-Gloss Clear lacquer. Other than that, looks very nice.
Rest in Peace

Au-50 for me as well. I don't really see anything wrong with the surfaces, I think that's just the pic/lighting.
