for those of you not familiar with Canadian coins before commenting you should do some research..look at the 1858 canadian dime.. there are 2 a normal and also 1858 8 over 5 hummmm .. so for the one member theres your answer it has happened before and documented. As for why its not graded ..Thats to easy.. until it is written about they will not slab it.just that easy.. as for value Why not ? does any one out there know what it would be worth if it is the only known one ? I think not.but there is an old addage that says.." An item is worth as much as one will pay for it "
Lets see what all the nay sayers have to say if and when it is recorded in the Catalogue and then certified as such ? My hats off to the person for finding it and maybe ya'll should comment on the real phony error guys who list those pennies and such other non sence....and we all know who had that penny , hahaha...No not the same person ...

well I just got a hold of the seller.. He has a great answer as to why the value..Because he knows no one will pay that much..he done it so all other collectors could check theirs and maybe someone out there will have another ? pretty simple and a great way to find out and let others go on a hunt ? would be something if even 1 other was found..

As for the 1858 8 over 5 I beleive there are only a handful of these certified and in G4 grade it is worth 750.00 not bad for something with several others known....So if the dime is the only 1 ? what do you think its worth......

Oh and the shipping ...is an errror The person even offered to have the Lawyer hand deliver it ...

looks like everyone is hung up on the price instead of whats really at hand here....Are we all not collectors ? do we not all hope to find something very unique ? Do I hear a tone of jealousy in the forum ? common guys have some respect and get with the real issue ? If it were you who made this discovery would you like for everyone to see this and allow others to go on the hunt ?

Can't blame the guy for trying to get publicity for his find.Until another is found the coin is stuck in a sort of variety/oddity limbo, won't be recognized by collectors as anything desirable until another example is found from the same die.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

To Wes , who commented about using a 5 instead of an 8...I think what happens is perhaps a simple error ..They reach for 8 but instead they grab a 5 ..they do sort of look the same ..When they realise what they done the simply take back the already punched coins and redo the 5 with an 8 on top....There are other stranger errors like the 1886 quarter series? a 6 over 3, another is 6 over 7 ect.... So back then it was a common occurence to make this type of error..Look at all the double punched dates and letters on the Victorian series...

Shouldn't he be on here (or other forums) discussing it, rather than putting up a clownish BIN on ebay? Something serious should look like it took more than five minutes to slap together.

Frankly, the 1858 large 5/5 cent blows this discovery away. How was that missed for 150 years?

It makes little sense it being a 8/5. Shouldn't it first be considered to be 8/7? Why would a mint employee working on a 1870 die have a 5 punch out at all? It looks like an 8 with two roundish bumps. In both cases, 5 or 7, you'd expect one side to look more like the angle (left for 5, right for 7) rather than round bumps.

It is well circulated (VG at best). Is there a possibility of PMD + time making this look like a repunch?

Hmm just the reason why I posted this, to create dialogue on an possible new and interesting variety, not a yawn to a Canadian collector and it may be a big deal. No! I have not listed anything on ebay for a 1,000,000 once let alone "thousands of times" so you may speak for yourself Scubu all the power to ya!
Now the Canadian 10 cent variety 8/5 Charlton Standard writes "An interesting variety occured through a dating blunder in which a "5" punch was used to repair a defective first 8. This coin sells at a high premium there is an AU55 example listed for auction for $9500. I can not tell for certain but the last A in Canada of the 1870 example listed shows doulbling that is similar to the A on an example of a 1858 8/5 10 cent that I have. Perhaps I will contact the seller and see if he can send a close up of the A or ask the question.
I believe the reason for these forums it to encourage and promote dialogue about the hobby.

nice to see collector kind of agrees with me on this one..Its amazing how fast others will jump before really looking into things...So what 1,000000 or what ever amount..The fact is it is what it is and I'm sure he put it here for everyone to help maybe find another proving there was a die blunder just as collector states of the 1858 ..

Its time to hunt the 1870's in case
