Based on the photos, I think the 1911 is better for eye appeal. However the photograph of the 1911 is far superior, which may be drawing my eye more to the 1911. It would be interesting to see both in hand.

Well I don't have a picture of the 1914-S Barber out of the slap but I did find one of the 1911 in a slab to make it more of an apples to apples comparison. Given these two pictures would anyone change their choice or not?

I like the 1914 better personally with those last pics.

I voted for the 1911, it almost has a cameo effect. Personally I think it sould have graded higher. It has less distracting marks than the 14s.

Given that the poll seems to favor the 1911 coin, a little disclosure is due. Both coins were indeed graded MS64 by PCGS. However the 1911 coin also carry's a "green bean" CAC sticker so those that felt it could have graded higher you may have a job waiting at CAC ;) One of the reason's I created this poll is that I'm in the market to upgrade my Barber dime in my 7070 type set. I have an opportunity to purchase the 1914-S at about $380 below the PCGS price guide (lists for $880 and I can get it for about $500). I also have an opportunity to purchase the 1911 at about $50 below the PCGS price guide (lists for $360 and I can get for about $310). In addition the population on the 1914-S is quite a bit lower. 44/39 for the 1914S and 271/215 for the 1911 I'd love to own both coins actually but don't have the funds to do so. I would be in the camp that prefers the looks of the 1911 coin. I really like a coin with character especially if it doesn't distract from the overall look. The "yellow" tint on the 1914-S concerns me a bit if and when the time comes to resell, but it's such a value and am attracted by the lower population. Anyway, thanks for your comments and any additional ones that may come. I guess I may need to sleep on it a couple more days. Great hobby we have eh? -edit. I found another picture of the 14-S from a past auction. This one really shows the yellow toning. Anyone know what causes this?

Given the new pics, I still prefer the 1911. Do you have pics of the reverses?

Ok, reverse pics in slabs (don't have any out of slabs). 1911 Reverse 1914-S Reverse

I suspect that the 1914-S was dipped before it was slabbed and the residue is responsible for the spotty yellowish hue. It is still a nice coin but I think the eye appeal for the 1911 is superior.

I think I'm going to go with the 1911. My gut was telling me to go with it before I started the thread but it's nice to see my gut probably got it right.
Thanks everyone for your input. No wonder I love this place.

Man, I really like the reverse on that 1911 as well. It's a real solid coin for the grade in my opinion.

Both dimes have their advantanges; I like the over appearance of the 1911, however I LOVE branch mint coins! I voted for the Philly.
