Just curious...I have never found an error coin in circulation..and I have also looked through hundreds and hundreds of rolls in the past. How does one go about spotting these...seems like for some of the minor errors you would have to examine every coin under a mag. glass. For the number of coins one would have to look through it seems it would be a full time job with not much return.

Is there any kind of secret process I am missing out on?

If I get them graded it will be ANCAS but most of the cent type have not been like the 97 D/ear so grading adds no great value but maybe this will be the year for a great variety type

You'd be wasting your money getting that coin graded. It is a squeeze job - a coin that was stacked with other coins and squeezed in a vise or hit with a hammer. It is not a die clash.

If it was from a new roll, how could it be a squeeze job?

I don't see this as a clash either. From my understanding a clash will show only in the fields as this is the highest part of the die. Also I think the clashed image should be 180 degrees opposite the existing image. Top of head at the bottom of the memorial.

Nice errors amac44. I look forward to opening new rolls. They are sometimes a treasure trove of poor quality minting. May the mints never get the quality just right!
