I suspect the 89 CC is a fake. Anyone know how many rev dies were used? I compared the mintmark against a certified piece and it doesn't match. (position is different) But if they used more than one rev die I could have been comparing two different dies.

I was thinking that this would be a good way to list a fake CC. make yourself seem like you dont know, offer them with a very low starting bid, and say you got them at the "estate sale"

The MM placement looks allot like the one listed at AMPEX here http://www.apmex.com/Product/66156/...45nAodwAQAQw I am not sure how many Dies were used but since AMPEX has 2 with different placement of the MM I can say it was at least that many

This was that seller's first-ever offering of coins.

There are 5 identified 1889-CC VAMs. The images rather resemble VAM-5, having the Far Date and dropped C, but I'm worried about the apparent weakness of the second C in the mint mark. It's easily the most common die pair for the date.

Have a look above the left spine of the top cotton leaf, to 2:00 from the T in LIBERTY. You'll see a line extending from the top spine of the leaf, aiming southwest to the wheat leaf. That's a known feature of this die.

But it's in the wrong place - too far up.

I dunno.

That 350 offer wasnt to far off considering the risk involved imo. I dunno what to think, he did post larger photos when asked so it could just be someone not knowing what they have, but it could also be a good scam artist. For the sake of the buyer hopefully its legit

Did you notice that the guy who offered $50 apiece is the guy who won the auction?
