Yep! I think they're prtetty spiffy. One of the first circulated sets I completed. I hadn't given much thought to it, but the mint began making Franklins the year I was born. Another good reason for liking them.

I only have one Franklin half, it's a pretty cool coin but for now I'm steering clear of collecting things other than Indian Head pennies. I say you should go for collecting the Halves.

The Franklin is a nice design, and well worth collecting, if that turns your crank. I have always liked them, but have never really thought much about putting together a set. Maybe I'll have to do that!

I too am working on a collection. Right now I am just getting circulated coins to fill holes than will begin to replace with MS coins.
I am also working on a Kennedy collection.

I started collecting Frankies because my dad said they were the ugliest coin ever designed :) Like several people have mentioned here, they began in my birth year and ran a too short time. I am working on a proof set and those rascals can cost some real money. One of the things I have found interesting about graded frankies is the difference between the full bell designation by NGC and PCGS. I believe NGC grades them harder than PCGS which seems to flow counter to their reputation. Anyone else notice that?

rons what years do you still need? I am also trying to fill the proof set of the series and I do have a couple duplicates, some from winning multiple auctions at the same time, and a couple from forgetting I already had a year when I bid at work

I have a MS-63+ set and only need 7 more but have stopped for a bit because of these being the more expensive ones of the set. I will eventually get back to it but needed a break for a bit. If you are going to put together a MS set I will let you know from my experience that they are going up in price all the time and getting harder to find good MS examples. I have been working on the set in earnest for at least a year and it may take at least another one just to get those last 7 coins.

I think that the Franklins are a good set if you are looking to put together a relatively inexpensive set. (This is the only complete set that I have) No key dates, and you'll hardly have to pay more than silver value to get a circulated set. Even the UNC coins are obtainable at pretty reasonable prices for most coins. I like the design, and think the Franklins will only go up in value considering their relatively low mintage.

I started collecting Franklins about 4 months ago.I was going to put together a complete set. Then I was offered a chance to purchase a complete set of Franklins and a complete set of Kennedys. I ended up purchasing both sets at a very good price. I ended up paying less than 2 dollars a coin for both set. Out of all of the complete sets that I have the Franklin set is mt favorite.

Regarding the 'dull strikes' of the Franklin half, the master die (used to make hundreds of individual dies for each year) was used from 1948 - 1959 before it was re-cut in 1960 to add more detail to the dies. This is why early date full strikes had much detail (espescially in the hairlines and profile), and the later dates up until 1959 did not.

Should you need any Franklins to fill your album, please let me know, I have extras in every year.

i have a question, my brother works for a bank, and I had him grab me a couple rolls of halves to search for Franklins. I'm a new collector, and my question is this: if I do find a franklin, what kind of condition should I expect it to be in? I've never done this before, but I'm very interested in starting, and w/ my bro having more access most, I thought I would have a leg up on some collectors.

I started my Franklin set after I completed my Kennedy set. Seemed like the natural thing to do.
At that time I belonged to another coin forum, and when I posted that I was starting a Franklin set, a wonderful member, out of the goodness of her heart, mailed me four or five BU Franklins, free of charge. This act of kindness jump-started my new collection, and within a few months it was complete.
It is housed in a Dansco Almum and the grades run from fine to BU.
