Here's what I think.
Judging by the other coins and who the seller is, I think this seller really is just selling off the few coins he acquired and he doesn't really know much about them. I believe that he believes the 1856 is genuine. I personally do not. The pictures are pretty tough and the coin doesn't look very wrong (from my poor vantage point), but it doesn't look right either. It might be a very good old fake. This date has been faked for over a hundred years. It's clearly not that old as those fakes were poor, but it could be a 30-40 year old fake or something to that effect.

The coin looks AU to me, if it's real someone is getting a great deal... but, I would guess it's a Chinese fake, the tail feathers are all messed up, he also doesn't show a very very close up shot of the date which is a must, on a coin like this. just my opinion.

I think it is a fake but I can't be sure because of the quality of the pictures. In all 1856 FE the O in OF is squared on the inside. The oval O, found on some 1857-58 is not on any 1856 FE. The O on the suspect 1856 coin appears to be oval.

Actually now that you mention it, yes it does look very wrong. Something else to consider. The main buyer who has been bidding this coin up has 31 bid retractions in 6 months and his 30-day history wouldn't even seem to indicate a very active buyer. THIRTY ONE! This makes me hate ebay so much. How is it that such a bidder is still allowed to stay on the site. It might also indicate some shill bidding and a more purposeful attempt to deceive and scam by the 1856 seller. |

If sellers agree to retract the bid I believe that ebay doesn't ding it against you, they do however give buyers MUCH more leeway with what they can and cant do since the buyers are what drives the site. Its a shame things like that are allowed but I do kind of understand why from their point of view. They do seem to be finally trying to level the playing field a bit for sellers with some of the new rules. Whatever is going on with this listing I would stay far far away. Theres little chance this will end well for the buyer |

I just thought these things were kept track of and if somebody were to get to 31, ebay would step in. I guess not. Maybe I should just make a nuclear bid to see how much the highest bidder bid on every single item. Retract it, then bid .01 more every time to save myself a few dollars per item. I won't really, but apparently nobody cares. Bryan, that is an excellent job you did...it clearly shows that the coin is not true. |

I didnt know buyers could do it, I've had it happen to me once as a seller but they emailed me and asked me to do it for them which I didnt mind since it sounded like an honest mistake

After looking at Bryan's cropped photos I am even more convinced that this coin is fake. On all 1856 FE the AM in AMERICA is closely spaced like the large letter 1858. If the A & M are separate then it is most likely an an altered date 1858 small letter FE.

Wow that's a lot of 56's in one place! macmercury, I think the third zero to the right of the comma (decimal point in this case) is a typo. Sounds about right at $25.00.

To me, the coin is fake. It looks wrong in so many ways, the lettering, the style of the eagle, finish. It just doesn't look like a real Flying Eagle cent. |

I have 5 FEC's and this looks nothing like any of them. They are all much lower grades, G-XF40 or so, but the date doesn't look right compared to the rest. The lettering looks off as well. The beak is also completely different than the other 5.

I haven't handled a great many FE's, but at first glance that coin screamed "FAKE". Bryan's close up confirmed it even more for me.
