The coin is still naked, seemingly preferred that way in the United Kingdom.

Sometimes also referred to as, "Madame in the raw".

Good Luck!

I'm wondering if they told you that based on laws for exporting local antiquities. Your coin is not local, it's US. I would imagine it falls outside of these restrictions

That was my initial thought too that they may have been thinking it was something of British heritage. It may not matter though as I dont know their laws

To sjh241:
I was never asked whether it was a British or foreign antique, just the age and value. I told Heritage I was having trouble sending it, but they weren't able to help. They suggested couriers, and I tried them all with no luck. That's why I'm auctioning it in London. I did contemplate flying to Texas with it, but thought it was a bit extreme.

I was curious because I am familiar with such laws as I lived in Greece for quite some time. It only applied for local coinage, and some vague references to other EU coins (i.e. EU law) or countries with similar export restrictions. It wouldn't have applied to lets say, an 1878 Morgan dollar that I wanted to "repatriate."
If that was the case and you got some bad info I hope it won't cost you some extra profit by selling it over here. On the flip side, selling it there will be less complicated for you. Hope you reach the 4k GBP figure. That's about $6400.
Too bad you didn't follow through on that Texas trip plan. You could have had a decent bbq rib meal or a good steak!

Nice coin... my guess is it will sell for about $5200 US. Good luck!

Wow. Happy to say that Windycity was off... Way off. Like multiply-by-two off!

No US auction house, no TPG, no slab, and $11,520 hammer price by the current exchange.

Indescribably cool. I sense an American involved who isn't afraid to reach across the pond for a good one.

Wow! Add in the Buyer's Premium and it brought over $13,000 USD. Very strong for a raw piece. :)

Almost $14,000. $11,520 + 20% = $13,824 If it was bought by someone in the EU add another 15% ($1,728) for VAT.

Hi everyone, I was going to update you but I've been beaten to it. I was stunned at the price achieved, maybe it was because the coin is rare around these parts.
Thanks again for all your advice over the last few months.
Happy collecting!

You're most welcome! Hope you enjoyed the coin while you owned it. London probably hasn't seen that many British pounds exchanged for one US dollar for quite some time! Any more details you could give on how the auction went? Any idea if it sold to a Brit, or is wending its way back to our shores?

No, I don't know any details about the auction and I haven't heard from the auction house since the sale. I'll let you know if I find anything out about the buyer.

To Philadelphian,
Found out from Dix Noonan Webb that the buyer is an American, so the coin will be repatriated. It wasn't one of you on this forum, was it?

Well, the wife is hinting that I have a nice Christmas present coming, but I don't think I've been that good this year...
