Thanks Bing... I dont think I could scare anyone off with my knowledge though :P What I know could be written on the back of a postage stamp.

Maybe the London coin fair is completely different to the kind of show you go to. It seemed that it was predominantly ancient coins for sale and nearly every stall had trays of them laid out.

These are all excellent coin. While I know next to nothing about the Greek ones. The Constantine and Diocletian are in beautiful condition. Congrats on an excellent haul.

Well all I will say is wow! .... And I am missing a siglos in my life. I like yours. What did yo spend on it if you don't mind me asking? I go to the New Haven coin show here in CT. I too saw the huge age gap. It was quite funny because the door said," the young men's association". Young men- I did not see one. It really is the hobby for the older gentleman. The ancient selection is one dealer with 2 coins. I bought them both... For cheap! Don't worry Dave if you came to my town's show, you would still be older than me. :-)

Wow sums it up. What a nice haul, and I agree the few coin shows I've been to most coins Ancients or not were over priced.

I do like the Istros stater, I cant comment on authenticity they are widely faked but your looks fine to me. The Thrace hemi is one of my first coins. Yours is very nice. Again I cant comment on authenticity because I havent really seen enough. There are a lot of different types. The Siglos I want, and is pretty cool. You don't see this that often in such a good condition, usually they are warn really bad and are punch to heck with counterstamps, great haul. The small extra is a mystery and deserves its own thread, I would guess some kind of Archaic coinage of maybe Lydia? That is truly a great haul, the Romans look super and the hammered English, well like the others I love the style they are not ancient but I would still buy Kudos to you on another great haul.

The Siglos was £100 and the Istros was £110...the rest were all much cheaper. I had intended to get 5-6 roman bronzes thinking they would be around £20 each, not so...you can find decent bronzes on Vcoins (Roma numismatic has tonnes) for not much money but in that department there seemed relatively poor value.

There was however lots of Greek gold and silver which seemed more competative.

I meant to get a Byzantine too but forgot about that... maybe after christmas I will treat myself to a decent Justin and Sofia... until then I must keep out of trouble and keep hold of my cash.

The mystery coin is interesting (tiny, probably 0.2g) it seems from what is left of the flan that it is archaic (the bulls head would have been in the centre of a square) and I vaguely recognise it but I cant think where from. I was thinking Larissa...putting a search in vcoins "AR Bull" doesn't throw up anything resembling it. I guess either one of you will let me know or I will have to be patient until I stumble across another one.

Very nice haul! Excellent coins!

I do like that Istros Gemini twins coin. Beyond my budget, although the smaller coins at around 7mm I might be able to pick one up after saving for awhile.

The two Romans are in fantastic condition, great looking coins

I know what you mean about socialising with others at these events, I usually find it very difficult too, I'm 35. I only really discus coins here where it seems to work OK, the anonymity of the internet seems to help.

I never been to a coin show before. I called a couple coin shops in town and they didn't seem to be too enthusiastic about selling ancient coins. Then asked if they had them at the coin show and they said no.

One of my local area stores is a V-Coins Ancient Coin Dealer, but is too far away for me to see often...

I guess I got luck on that part, as there are ancient coins at said dealer and most major local shows.

There was really no shortage of ancients at this show... had I gone 1 year ago I would have been very dissapointed since I wouldnt have had a clue what I was looking at.

The dissapointment this time was that 1 dealer had lots of white five pound notes and sets of consecutive serials but aside from that no decent note dealer. I had intended on buying 1917 $1 and $2 US legal tender notes and need a $50 small head green seal (1985) to complete my US type collection (well kinda, I would have a selection of large types and every denomination and seal colour except for Hawaii) Also I needed a couple of portrait series notes for England as I am missing a signature for both £5 and £10.

Most stall holders gave 10% discount without quibble, even if not asked for it. The Darius he offered me 20% ^^ and maybe he hooked a fish because he gave me a reciept so maybe I will drop into his premises one day.

The only coins I've ever bought from a dealer and the dealer was easily 3 times my age. Lovely guy - I bought my first ancients from him for £1 each (down from £2) because he wanted to ensure that coin collecting was passed to the next generation. He put a £400 coin in my hand which was pretty cool. But the other people at the stall were...well, older than the dealer.

I think young people are on forums because we use the internet - I dont think an internet forum is an accurate representation. But hey, the fewer collectors, the less the demand, the cheaper the items.

The only ancients I get to see up close and personal before buying is at this local coin show, and its usually one or two dealers that have them.
While were (sort of) talking about age here, strangely enough I have never felt discriminated against because of my age (20). I even managed to get into a good discussion about ancients from this very friendly dealer (who was probably in his late 50s or 60s). But aside from there and here on CCF, I don't really have any other place to discuss coins.
