In my collection of Carthage I am working up to Punic silver... well an electrum stater...I might have to work well...LONGTIME...at this rate. Neither are cheap...These Punic coins are getting crazy though. Who else has noticed that? On ebay, Vcoins and numismall its not uncommon to see near slugs sell for $50 bucks. Wild!

You have been buying some interesting pieces recently and this is sweet. Imagine what it would have looked like freshly minted? As impressive as any modern day coin.

that's another cool coin AN . you've been on a roll man. 10g, there's some meat on those old bones. so what do you mean by it was described as belonging to hannibal? like it may have been in one of his chests of coin at time?

A roll yes its been a good month! From Hannibals stash no. That would be awesome. Carthage mints are a bit iffy when you come down to it.During the second Punic War when Hannibal invaded the Italian Peninsula they faced a financial nightmare. Nearly all the gold and silver went to pay the Mercenary forces fighting the Romans in the Italian Peninsula. Most likely the debased coinage was used by the locals of the Carthaginian domain to partake in regular everyday commerce. In fact the coin was struck under Hannibal's authority, during war time. Much like the Steel pennies of the United States minted under the Authority of FDR during WW2. I wish I could elaborate more on the particulars but but as of late the baby is with Grandma and I am swimming in cheap wine. Glad you like the coin.
