I guess this shows my ignorance of these Greek coins. Thanks for the input.

Not an ugly looking thing, but since it's apparently intended to look as if it has circulated ("worn"), I would expect a surface that is not that uniform and smooth. At least some minor bumps, scatches, imperfections,...

Perhaps--or it shows my ignorance of what's possible on Greeks. The surfaces are just too regular to my eyes. Also, when Athena's helmet is depicted, the details are more specific. The nose guard, the crest, and Scylla are more detailed than what I see here.

It's a very pretty lookin' thing ... sadly, the coin-folks here seem to be a bit doubtful whether it is genuine or not ...
Ummm, and you know what Mr Deniro says about doubt, right?

Right...I guess that's my moniker now. I missed Dionysos comment about the gold stater. Comparing to an original clears things up.

It is a silver copy of a published fake. It is from the Lipanoff Studio, Published: Sofia 2005, no.36 by Dr. Ilya Prokopov. These are modern engraved dies. Here is an example from the same dies in gold (or goldish). Martin

For a fake that's really a nice looking piece.

The Lipanoff stuff is collectible in its own right, it wont carry the same prices as Pauduan in the future but they are, on the whole very well done. Its a shame the obviously skilled people who made them couldn't have displayed their talents in a more 'legal' way. I'd be happy to own some just out of interest but would only pay 'bottom dollar' for the privilege right now.

Well, with several hours remaining on the auction, so far it has garnered a bid price of $112. I agree with BH. It would be nice to own, but at a much lower price than this.

$152.20 it went for, with what looked like a bit of shill bidding right at the end, another victory for ebay

It's not worth that...someone thought it was real, or they plan to resell?
