I don't sell on ebay. Is it possible for him to just change his user name and start again under a different name? |

his user id is mdow30. he has just been NARU'd by ebay today. Apparently there were many here that helped report this guy to ebay's ccw. Another bad guy bites the dust. good work |

really? its illegal? or is it a case of Malum in se? i vote the latter and do not think law enforcement can get involved. Its not a case of known counterfeiting sales, its a case of offense to the morals that drive the ethical half of the collecting community. |

dsfreeworld, what he is doing is called fraud. By taking an item and deliberately representing it to be something other than what actually is is what makes it illegal. Ed ANA LM-3175 |

Well, I wouldn't say he's representing as something that it's not. To be honest, I'm surprised ebay removed the listings (though I'm glad they did.) He's not telling the buyers that it's not scratched, he just isn't saying that it is. Buyer beware... |

Immoral, yes. Illegal, no. The seller is removing evidence of someone's subjective opinion. That's all a TPG does - give subjective opinions - and they make absolutely sure that they disclaim to that effect. There's no connection whatsoever to any matter of "legality." |

I'm new to coin collecting, but this thread is very disturbing to me. Is it illegal to remove someone's opinion of something written on something you own? If it is we are truly on a course
in this country to losing all opportunities to be free. I am still free to make my own opinions and voice them. I certainly don't agree with everyone else's opinions. That is where our freedom kicks in and we, as grownups process the information and come to our own conclusions. I think he is perfectly within his rights to take the coin out of it's case. If he doesn't make it apparent that it has problems,or the pics aren't clear, that is the nature of buying things on the internet. Buyer Beware. Anyone who can't take a good picture would be a criminal in these circumstances.

I hope that wasn't this guy's only income for his family. Now he is going to have a hard time getting food on the table. I don't know what other things he has done on ebay, but this example is no good reason for a witch hunt. Which is exactly what this reminds me of. |

Withholding known defects is against ebay rules. Just like the Consumer Protection Agency and the Better Business Bureau, ebay has made these rules to protect the consumer from fraudsters. I'm sorry, but, anyone that thinks it is OK to misrepresent an item by omitting known defects, has an ethics problem. JMO |

The juiced photos in the new auctions are what's really wrong here. Either the seller "smoothed" the fields by some means or photo-shopped the images. Some severe scratches were barely visible in the new auctions; areas that were absolutely torn up with deep scratches looked almost problem-free once this character re-listed the crack-outs.

If....... the pictures were altered that would be a misrepresentation. I never condoned misrepresentation. Does someone here know that these pictures have been altered? How is it confirmed that these two coins are even the same coin? Is someone here tracking this guys purchases? It may be that a member of the secret service is a part of this forum?

It's not that deep, sparky, and here is where I must politely ask you, an admitted newcomer to the hobby, to listen to the words of those with long years of experience. We know where to look for these previous sales, and we know how to spot the minute similarities in the images which form concrete proof that it's the same coin.
You will develop similar skills as time goes by.
And it is in the same vein when I ask you to understand that, legal or not, what this seller is doing is a blatant affront to all that numismatists everywhere hold as morally correct behavior. It is unjustifiable by any rationale.

Thank you for your clarity. The nuances of coin collecting are all a new adventure for me. Human behavior is not. I do value your opinion and will listen to the old hats here.
When I see a feeding frenzy, calling for law enforcement on what appeared to me to be shaky grounds it disturbed me.
It is only because of mature people like you that I continue to even bother to come here to learn.
